ATHENS, Tenn. – Tennessee Wesleyan was able to spoil Campbellsville's sweep by taking the third and final game of the series this afternoon. After leading through five and a half innings, a Bulldog sixth-inning homerun was the momentum shift they needed to take one from the Tigers, 3-2.
No. 20 Campbellsville (6-5) got on the board early scoring in the first and second innings before being shutout for the remaining seven.
Matthew Valdez led off the Tigers with a single to center and
Ty Housden followed suit singling to left moving Valdez into scoring position. A ground out to second by
Tyler Deason advanced runners to second and third with one out and
Marco Murillo stepped to the plate and collected an RBI on a ground ball to second.
In the second,
David Montoya singled to center and
Austin Peterson followed with a one-out double to center that scored Montoya. scoring the Tigers second and final run.
Starter
Parker Loutensock tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless ball before allowing his first earned run of the season in the bottom of the third. With one out, Loutensock walked one and he advanced on an error moving into scoring position with one out. After picking up a strikeout, Loutensock allowed a double to score TWU's first run.
In the bottom of the sixth
Logan Roberts entered the game to replace Loutensock on the mound for the Tigers and Tennessee Wesleyan tied it up with one swing of the bat. Collin Ridout hit a homered to right field tying the game, 2-2.
After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh,
Justin Phillips replaced Roberts on the mound. Phillips walked his first batter but was able to pitch his way out of the threat allowing no hits.
The Tigers had the opportunity in eighth to reclaim the lead with bases loaded but were unable to deliver.
In the bottom half,
DJ Wilson entered for the Tigers and with one out it was another CU error that ended up being the game-winner for the Bulldogs.
Matthew Valdez and
Tyson Solis led the Tigers offense with two hits each, while Peterson and Murillo had the RBIs.
Campbellsville now has a non-conference road game on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Indiana Tech University. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
