Baseball splits road doubleheader at Martin Methodist on Friday afternoon

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Campbellsville baseball team split its lone two games this week as it beat Martin Methodist College in the first of two games, 6-1, but lost game two 10-2 on Friday.

After a stretch where they won nine of 10 games, the Tigers (10-9) have just one win in their last four matchups.

Campbellsville 6, Martin Methodist 1

To start game one, Matthew Valdez put the Tigers ahead 1-0 early with a home run out to left-centerfield field in the leadoff position. The senior now has five home runs this season.

The RedHawks got the first-inning run back in the third inning, but in the next half inning, Campbellsville regained the lead and never looked back. The long ball continued to pay dividends for Campbellsville after Tyler Deason drilled his first home run of the season down the right field line to put the Tigers back on top 2-1.

In the top of the sixth inning the Tigers plated four runs to pick up some insurance runs late in the game.

With one away in the sixth inning, Deason doubled out to right-centerfield and DePaul Blunt placed runners on the corners after reaching on an infield single. Tyson Solis drove in Shane Stober -- who pinch ran for Deason -- from third base after dropping a ball just behind third base, which ended up a fielder's choice with Blunt being forced out at second base.

After Campbellsville had two outs, the Tigers had runners on first and second base after David Montoya reached on a walk. Chris Taitague then delivered a double scoring Solis and Montoya to push the Campbellsville lead to 5-1. Brandon Douglas was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive, then the lineup came back to the top of the order, where Valdez singled out to left field allowing Taitague to score on the play to end the inning.

Martin Methodist got a runner on base in the seventh inning, but Marco Murillo helped the Tigers record a game-ending double play to secure a 6-1 victory.  Campbellsville recorded nine hits compared to just three from the RedHawks.

Martin Methodist 10, Campbellsville 2

After recording just one run in the first game, the RedHawks rebounded quickly and took a 7-0 lead early in game two.

In the first inning, a single from John David Isbell plated Alex McKelvy to put Martin Methodist ahead, 1-0. The RedHawks then posted a crooked number in the bottom of the second inning scoring six runs on five hits. Of the six runs that scored, four came from singles, as Martin Methodist did not have an extra-base hit in the inning.

Trailing 7-0, Montoya led off third inning with a single back up the middle and he moved up to third base on single from Valdez and groundout from Solis. Deason drove in Montoya from third base with a groundout to third base.

However, the RedHawks answered back with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning off a single from Drew Nipper as Martin Methodist stretched its lead to 9-1.

Campbellsville scored its second run of game two after Austin Peterson recorded a one-out single to score Ty Housden from second base after he doubled to right-centerfield to start the fourth inning.

In the seven-inning game, Martin Methodist added an insurance run with an RBI double from Isbell, scoring Nipper.

The Tigers recorded just one hit over their last three at-bats as Martin Methodist picked up a 10-2 win in game two.

Campbellsville is back on the road Monday afternoon for a single nine-inning game against Midway University in Midway, Kentucky starting at 2 p.m. ET.
