CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville's men's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday morning to finish its invitational after beating Webber International University and Lawrence Tech University in four sets at the Powell Athletic Center.
With the two wins on Saturday morning, the Tigers have moved to 12-11 on the year and the 12 wins surpassed their win total from last season to set a new program mark.
Campbellsville 3, Webber International 1
After dropping two matches on Friday, Campbellsville came out strong to start day two. The Tigers scored first and never looked back as their lead climbed to 6-2 out of the gate. The first 10-point advantage Campbellsville took in the first set came at 18-8. The Tigers went on to win the opening set, 25-14.
The tables turned in the second set as the Warriors (3-10, 2-4) scored first and never trailed. After falling behind 15-6, Campbellsville brought the game back within three points, but could not get any closer as Webber International tied the match at one with a 25-17 win in set two.
During the third set, the two teams played even throughout as the largest lead for either team was two points over the first 41 rallies. With the set tied at 21 all, the Tigers scored four-straight points to wrap up the set with a 25-21 victory.
Both teams jockeyed for position to start the fourth set. After Campbellsville scored the first two points of the game, the Warriors countered with the the next five. Webber International slowly stretched its lead to five points. With the Tigers trailing 14-9, they battled back to tie the score at 15, but could not regain the lead.
The Warriors held set point at 24-21 forcing Campbellsville into a timeout. Out the break, the Tigers scored the next four points to grab a 25-24 lead – their first since 2-1 in the fourth set. An error tied the score at 25, but back-to-back blocks from
Jeremy Hernandez and
Shmuel Edney-Williams sealed the set win for Campbellsville, 27-25, and the match, 3-1.
In the four sets, Campbellsville hit .339 and had 62 kills with
Diego Romero leading the way with 18, followed by
Rafael Cruz with 12. Liam Gilchrist led the Warriors with 15 kills.
Campbellsville 3, Lawrence Tech 1
Campbellsville got off to a slow start in game two after dropping the opening game to the Blue Devils (6-15). The Tigers never led and Lawrence Tech took the open stanza, 25-17. The Blue Devils hit .348 in the set – the second highest by either team in the match – and Campbellsville hit -.054 in the set.
Lawrence Tech continued to control the match and started out an 8-3 run in the second set. The Tigers got back on track and took a 14-13 lead. After trading momentum, the score was tied at 18 and then again at 23, but a pair of errors from the Blue Devils helped Campbellsville secure a 25-23 victory to tie the match at one set each.
In the third set, neither team gave an inch as the set was played within a five-point window over the first 40 rallies. The Tigers capped off the close-knit set with the final three points to take a 2-1 lead in the match after winning 25-21.
Late in the fourth set, Campbellsville started to run away from Lawrence Tech after an 8-2 to grab a 16-10 lead. The Tigers pushed their lead to 24-14, but the Blue Devils fought off three set points before a kill from
Stefan Sretenovic propelled Campbellsville to a 25-17 win in the final set to seal the four-set victory.
For the match, the Tigers hit just .135, compared to .200 from Lawrence Tech. Cruz posted a match-high 14 kills, followed by Edney-Williams with 13 kills. Cruz posted a double-double with 10 digs.
Over the two matches, Hernandez racked up 83 assists.
The Tigers return to action next Friday at the Siena Heights University Invitational in Adrian, Michigan.
