Men's volleyball finishes Siena Heights Tournament with 2-2 record; Cruz earns All-Tourney honors

ADRIAN, Mich. — Tiger volleyball competed in the Siena Heights Invitational this weekend and finished with a 2-2 record.
 
Campbellsville (14-13) went 1-1 each day, as the Tigers fell to Siena Heights (3-0) and defeated Lawrence Tech (3-0) on Friday, while falling to Ottawa (3-1) and winning over Judson University (3-1)
 
The Tigers were led by Rafael Cruz recording 42 kills in the four matches to earn him All-Tournament team honors. Cruz now ranks ninth in the country with 3.7 kills per game and No. 11 with 282 kills.
 
Campbellsville gets back on the court Monday night as Brewton-Parker travels to the Powell Athletic Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
 
Match one: Siena Heights 3, Campbellsville 0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-16)
 
The Tigers were right there with SHU, falling in the first two sets (25-23) but CU could not overcome a -0.138 hitting percentage in the third frame to rally back.
 
In the first two sets, CU was stellar from the offensive side of the net. The Tigers hit .414 and .353, respectively and even out-hit Siena Heights in the second frame (.226).
 
In the first frame, CU trailed 20-13, but rallied to bring the score within one, 24-23 with a 10-4 run. But SHU's Trevor Holston delivered the game-winning kills.
 
In the second, CU rallied again. The Tigers scored five straight points after trailing 24-19 but SHU's Tyler Hubbard-Neil delivered the blow this time.
 
In the third, Campbellsville pulled the set within three, 15-12, but Siena Heights finished the frame on a 10-4 run.
 
Match two: Campbellsville 3, Lawrence Tech 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-23)
 
The Tigers got back on the winning ways by holding the Blue Devils to hitting only .055. Jeremy Hernandez dished out 27 assists, while Cruz tallied 12 kills to lead CU.
 
In the first frame, CU lead 19-12 but Lawrence Tech pulled the deficit within two with a quick 5-0 run. Bu the Tigers answered the call from coach Billy Gregory out of a timeout and ended the set on a 6-2 run.
 
In the second set, the Tigers scored six of the final seven points and took advantage of a -0.080 hitting percentage for the Blue Devils.
 
The Tigers set was tight as CU ended up scored five straight points once again to rally from a late deficit. CU trailed 23-20 but Cruz picked up three kills in the final five points and the Tigers took advantage of a pair of attack errors by LTU.
 
Match three: Ottawa 3, Campbellsville 1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 25-13)
 
The Tigers struggled on Saturday morning with their lowest hitting percentage of the tournament, hitting .038 with 37 kills and 32 errors on 133 attacks. Ottawa finished with 52 kills and only 22 errors to hit .224.
 
After leading by two, 15-13, Ottawa finished the frame on a 10-4 run and scored six straights late to seal the 1-0 lead.
 
The Tigers answered in the second set. Once CU led 3-2, the Tigers never trailed the rest of the way. Ottawa did cut the lead to one on two separate occasions, 20-19 and 22-21, but the first of four service errors knotted the match at one set a piece.
 
In the Tigers, Ottawa scored five straight in the middle of the frame and the Tigers never could recover.
 
The fourth set was back-and-fourth the entire way and Campbellsville held an advantage until Ottawa rallied to lead 24-23.
 
Trailing 23-22, Ottawa scored three straight to seal the match and win 25-23.
 
Match four: Campbellsville 3, Judson 1 (25-13, 25-13, 22-25, 25-14)
 
Jeremy Hernandez dished out 42 assists, while Cruz finished the weekend with a tournament-high 21 kills and hit .304. But it was the Tigers block that made the difference as CU finished with 14 total blocks and out-killed Judson, 56-32.
 
The Tigers dominated the first two sets with matching 25-13 wins.
 
In the third, Judson brought the match back to 2-1.
 
The fourth was all Campbellsville again, winning 25-14.
