Smith goes bombs away; Quint and Gailor pitch gems to lead #4 Lady Tigers to doubleheader wins

LEBANON, Tenn. — Alexis Smith homered three times and Neely Quint picked up her 16th win in game one, while Morgan Gailor twirled a gem in game two to sweep Cumberland University in Friday's doubleheader.

The fourth-ranked Lady Tigers ran away with a 9-4 win in game one and clung to a 3-1 victory to seal the sweep. With the victories, Campbellsville improves 25-3 overall and 6-0 inside Mid-South Conference play.

Both programs conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

Game one: Campbellsville 9, Cumberland 4

It didn't take long for Alexis Smith to continue her streak from last weekend as she turned on a 1-2 change up for the first home run of the day – a three-run shot scoring Rebecca Miller and Tori Humphrey.

CU held that 3-0 advantage through three innings, but Cumberland scratched a run in the fourth. After a single and an error, the Phoenix had runners on first and third with no outs. Quint induced a 4-6-3 double play to concede an unearned run and later worked out of the jam with a fly out.

The Lady Tigers answered right back with Smith's second homer of the afternoon, as she took a 3-1 fast ball to the opposite field.

Cumberland matched the Lady Tigers' two runs in the home half of the inning after taking advantage of another error.

With runners on second and third and a base open in the sixth reliever Alexa Snyder decided to pitch to Smith and she made them pay by going bombs away to centerfield on a 1-2 rise ball.

CU added its only run of the game not via the long ball in the seventh. Jacqueline Roof delivered a two-out RBI single to score Mia Aldridge.

The Lady Tigers totaled 14 hits, as Smith went 4-for-4 with a single, three home runs and seven RBI. In the last eight plate appearances going back to last weekend, Smith has tallied four homers, a single and two walks.

In addition to Smith, Tori Humphrey went 3-for-4 in game one to score three times and drove in another.

Quint worked out of multiple jams by picking up her 12th complete-game of the season and 16th win. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out two.

Game two: Campbellsville 3, Cumberland 1

Jacqueline Roof led off the second contest with her fourth homer of the season, but Cumberland answered in the home half to tie it at one. Those were the only two hits Morgan Gailor allowed until the sixth inning and the only baserunner she allowed until a walk in the fifth.

In the second frame, the Lady Tigers regained the lead after Ryleigh Oldham delivered a two-out RBI single scoring Mia Aldridge.

Gailor then sat down 12-straight batters before a leadoff single by Tyra Graham in the sixth. The Lady Tigers would then need to work out of another jam. Imani Torregano reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second with no outs but Gailor picked up a strikeout and a couple pop ups to get out of the jam unscathed.

Campbellsville added an insurance run in the seventh. Roof and Miller both singled to start the frame and were followed with an RBI double by Humphrey down the right field line.

Gailor allowed her fourth hit in the seven inning, but Cumberland couldn't take advantage of the game-tying run reaching the plate.

Gailor went the distance for her third complete-game of the season and improved to 7-3 overall. She also allowed only four hits and struck out five.

In game two, the top three batters in the lineup – Roof, Miller and Humphrey – all tallied four hits and drove in two of the three runs.
