Cumberland spoils Mid-South sweep for No. 4 Lady Tigers, winning game four 6-4

LEBANON, Tenn. — After the fourth-ranked Lady Tigers won game three of the series, 8-3, Cumberland University spoiled the sweep with a 6-4 win in game four.

With the win over CU in the series finale, the Phoenix (25-8, 3-5 MSC) end a 14-game losing skid to Campbellsville (25-4, 7-1 MSC). The last time Cumberland defeated Campbellsville came back in March of 2014.

Neely Quint picked up her 17thwin of the season in game one by tossing another complete-game. Jacqueline Roof led the Lady Tigers with three hits in the two games, scored two runs and drove in two. Tori Humphrey had also had three hits and scored three with a home run in the first game.

Morgan Gailor (7-4) was out-dueled by Cumberland's Morgan Arndt (8-4) in the second contest, as both pitchers allowed only three earned runs.

Game one: Campbellsville 8, Cumberland 3

The Lady Tigers jumped out in front with a run in the first, as Ryley Whitney drove in Tori Humphrey, who singled, to put CU ahead 1-0.

Cumberland took a brief lead in the home-half – their first lead of the series – with two runs. Kayley Caplinger delivered an RBI ground out and Tawnee Hegre singled to right field to put the Phoenix up, 2-1.

But that lead didn't last long, as Campbellsville put up a three-spot in the second. Rebecca Miller laid down a suicide squeeze to score Ryleigh Oldham, but the Humphrey delivered a 3-run round-tripper to left field to give CU a 5-2 lead.

Cumberland came right back with a single run in the third, but Quint worked out of multiple jams in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Phoenix scoreless.

The Lady Tigers put the game out of reach with a three-spot in the fifth. Mia Aldridge, who doubled to left field, and Dana Adkins, who reached on a fielder's choice, both scored on an error off the bat of Roof before Rebecca Miller used an RBI groundout to put Campbellsville ahead, 8-3.

Quint sat the Phoenix down 1-2-3 in the seventh – the lone clean frame for the senior hurler.

Game two: Cumberland 6, Campbellsville 4

The Phoenix put up a four-spot in the second inning and Campbellsville was never able to recover. Gailor allowed a one-out single to Courtney Miles, walked Paola Del Valle and an error loaded the bases. Shelby Phelps then delivered an RBI single and was followed with a bases clearing double by Tyra Graham to score three unearned runs.

Gailor then settled down in the third, fourth and fifth innings sitting down 12-of-13 batters and facing the minimum through the middle frames.

CU did pick up two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, as the Lady Tigers had a pair of sac flies by Alexis Smith and Dana Adkins

But it was the sixth inning that ended up being the deciding factor. Gailor allowed a leadoff homer by Miles – the fourth of the season – and then Taylor Woodring doubled to score Kayla Hoopenjans for the game-winning runs.

Gailor finished throwing six innings, allowed eight hits, six runs - three earned.

Trailing 6-2, The Lady Tigers would bring the game-winning run to the plate. Smith reached on single up the middle to lead off the frame but Ryley Whitney and Mia Aldridge both recorded two quick outs. Then Campbellsville rallied with two down. Brianna Scott singled up the middle to score Smith and Jordan Ison picked up an infield pinch-hit single to put runners on first and second. Ryleigh Oldham scored a run with an RBI single up the middle to score Scott to bring up Jacqueline Roof as the game-winning run at the plate. With a 1-0 count, Roof squared a ball up to right-center field, but Taylor Woodring ran it down for the Phoenix.

The Lady Tigers get back in action with a big matchup with No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday, April 4. First pitch at Veterans Memorial Park is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
