Tale of two games for Lady Tiger softball; CU splits on final day of Gulf Shores Invite

GULF SHORES, Ala. — It was a tale of two games on Sunday afternoon for the Lady Tigers. No. 12 Campbellsville ran away with an 8-2 win over No. 8 William Carey but lost 2-0 to Faulkner in the nightcap of the Gulf Shores Invitational Gold Bracket.

The Lady Tigers scored eight combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings vs. William Carey and played solid defense but did not plate a run and committed four errors against Faulkner.

Neely Quint earned the victory against the Crusaders to improve to 6-0. Quint tossed another complete-game, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out five.

Morgan Gailor (3-2) fell victim to another tough-luck loss by allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out three.

Offensively, Rebecca Miller, Jacqueline Roof, Mia Aldridge and Ryleigh Oldham had two hits apiece while, Aldridge and Oldham both had two RBI in game one. Alexis Smith and Oldham finished with the lone hits in game two.

Game one: Campbellsville 8, William Carey 2

The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after a one-out hit-by-pitch came around to score on an RBI single by Kimberly Gilbert. William Carey ended up loading the bases, but Quint worked out of the jam.

Fast forwarding to the fourth inning, the Lady Tigers took a 3-1 lead by playing small ball. Ryley Whitney reached on an error and Mia Aldridge singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Kalin Bottoms replaced Whitney on the bases and Kelly Wheeler moved the runners with a sac bunt. Oldham followed suit with an RBI single to drive in two. Oldham advanced to second base on the throw and later scored on a run-scoring single by Jaqueline Roof.

CU took advantage of a one-out walk in the fifth to break the game wide open. Smith and Whitney both walked and advanced on a wild pitch before Aldridge scored them both with a two-RBI single.

Jordan Ison picked up a pinch-hit single to score Aldridge and Oldham followed with an RBI triple to plate another. Rebecca Miller beat out an infield single to plate Oldham giving CU an 8-1 lead.

William Carey plated its second run in the sixth with an RBI single by Hannah Gasaway.

Game two: Faulkner 2, Campbellsville 0

A leadoff walk to Shelby Brown came back to haunt Gailor in the circle. She moved all the way to third on a sac bunt and ground out and later scored an unearned run on CU's first error of the day.

In the fourth inning, a leadoff single and another sac bunt moved Brown into scoring position again. She moved to third on a base knock by Addigail Barron to put runners on the corners with one out.

Gailor looked as if she would get out of the inning without any harm by inducing a popup to Smith at first base for the second out but another error plated the second run.

In the fifth, Brianna Scott was plunked to lead off the frame and moved into scoring position with a sac bunt by Whitney and stole third base, but CU couldn't bring her in with less than two outs.

Smith put CU on the bases in the seventh with a leadoff single, but the Lady Tigers were unable to come up with the timely hit.

Emma Cornell improved to 6-0 for Faulkner after tossing the complete game two-hitter.

Campbellsville will now have a few days to prepare for the NFCA Classic in Columbus, Ga. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play Lawrence Tech and Warner University on Thursday, March 9.
