Quint earns a win and save; Lady Tigers use five homers to start 2-0 in NFCA Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Lady Tiger softball put up 15 runs in two games and started the NFCA Classic with a 2-0 record.

No. 12 Campbellsville defeated Lawrence Tech 7-1 in game one and followed that up with an 8-7 victory over No. 22 Warner University in game two.

The Lady Tigers have a third game tonight vs. St. Ambrose at 8 p.m. ET. Fans can tune in on the CU Sports Network starting at 7:45.

Neely Quint (8-0) earned a win and a save in the two games. Quint went twirled a complete-game six-hitter in game one, allowing one run in the seventh inning and striking out six. In game two, Quint pitched the final two innings allowing one earned run and striking out a pair.

Morgan Gailor (4-2) earned the win in game two, tossing five innings and allowing three earned runs and striking out three.

Offensively, CU parked five home runs in the two games combined. Ryleigh Oldham and Tori Humphrey both had a pair, while Alexis Smith had the fifth.

In game one, Ryley Whitney went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Humphrey went 3-for-4 against Warner. Whitney is 4-for-5 so far today with the third game coming up tonight.

Game one: Campbellsville 7, Lawrence Tech 1

CU put together two runs in each of the second, third and fifth innings to take a commanding lead. With two outs in the second, Whitney and Mia Aldridge hit back-to-back doubles to score a run and Kelly Wheeler followed with an RBI single to put CU ahead, 2-0.

In the third, Humphrey delivered a moon-shot homer just over the fair pole down the rightfield line to start the rally and put CU ahead, 3-0. Smith followed with a double and Whitney scored her with an RBI single up the middle.

In the fourth, Oldham put the Lady Tigers ahead, 5-0, with her team-leading fourth homer of the season.

In the fifth, Smith parked a two-run homer after Humphrey walked to give CU a 7-0 lead.

Quint allowed a Lawrence Tech run to score in the seventh for her only blemish in game one. CU's offense was 7-for-12 at the plate with two runs and scored four of its seven runs with two outs.

Game two: Campbellsville 8, Warner University 7

Brianna Scott led off the second inning with a hit-by-pitch – the first of two in the second game. After advancing on a sac bunt by Whitney, Aldridge drove in Scott with an RBI single to left.

CU put up a seven-spot in the third to break the game open and lead 8-0. CU used a pair of home runs by Humphrey (2-run) and Oldham (3-run), which sandwiched a Whitney two-RBI single.

But the Lady Tigers' offense went silent after that. In the final three innings at the plate, CU was only able to muster two hits.

Gailor sat the Royals down 1-2-3 in the first and second innings before getting out of a jam in the third.

Warner then scored seven unanswered runs off Gailor and Quint to make it interesting. The Royals scored two unearned runs in the fourth after a pair of Lady Tiger errors.

Trailing now 8-2, Warner scored three more with one swing of the bat in the fifth. Sara Bruno hit her sixth home run of the season – a three-run shot – to pull the CU advantage to three, 8-5.

In the sixth, Quint relieved Gailor and allowed two runs. The tying run was 60-feet away at third base, but Quint worked Kayla Bruno into a ground ball to end the Warner rally.

In the seventh, Quint earned her first save of the season by sitting Warner down 1-2-3.

Campbellsville plays St. Ambrose at 8 p.m. ET for the third game today and rounding our Day 1 of the NFCA Classic.
