CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville men's volleyball team dropped to 10-11 on the season after losing 3-0 to Warner University and Morningside College on Friday night inside the Powell Athletic Center.
After an intense four-set win on Thursday night, the Tigers could not carry the momentum into Friday night as they lost all six sets in their two matches.
Warner 3, Campbellsville 0
Warner game out fast in the first set and never looked back the rest of the match. The Royals (10-2, 7-0) scored 10 of the first 14 points in the opening set. Campbellsville continued to chip away at its deficit, but could never to take the lead. The Tigers tied the match at one all and two all, but never led as Warner took the opening set, 25-19.
In a tight start to the second set, Campbellsville was never able to take the lead, but tied the score at 12. The Royals then flexed their muscle and scored the next eight points to extend the lead to 20-12. The Tigers cut into the deficit, but dropped the second set, 25-17.
Warner continued to roll with the momentum in the third set and went on an 11-4 run to start. The Royals continued to stretch their lead to 20-9 and then won the third and final set, 25-13, to complete the sweep.
For the match, Warner hit .323 and had 43 kills led by Jordan Barreto with a match-high 16 kills on 34 swings. The Tigers hit. 115 overall.
Jeremy Hernandez recorded 21 assists on 25 kills for Campbellsville.
Morningside 3, Campbellsville 0
The Tigers could not regain momentum against the Mustangs (6-13) as Campbellsville was swept for the second time on Friday night. After trading points out of the gate, four-straight points from Morningside gave it an 8-4 lead. The Mustangs continued to pull away and grabbed their largest lead in the first set at 17-10.
However, Campbellsville did not back down and pulled within a point at 23-22. The Tigers were then facing a set point and after back-to-back timeouts from Campbellsville, it rallied to tie the set at 24 to cap off a 5-1 run. The Tigers battled off four set points in the opening stanza, but Morningside never lost the lead and won the set, 29-27.
The Mustangs maintained the momentum to start the second set and ran out to a 5-1 lead. Morningside saw its lead balloon to 17-10 and then with the score at 17-13, the Mustangs went on 8-1 run to end the set and take a 2-0 lead after winning set two, 25-14.
Campbellsville did not lead at any point in the second or third set and only led once in the first set (3-2) as Morningside completed the sweep and ran away with the final set, 25-15.
Oscar Alvarez Cance led all hitters with 15 kills, while Caden Toben finished with 32 assists. The Mustangs had Toben and Jacob Loberg record 12 digs each and
Stefan Sretenovic and
Noel Camello finished with 12 digs each for the Tigers. Sretenovic capped off his double-double with a team-high 10 kills.
Campbellsville hit just .009 for the match and hit under .100 in the all three sets. Morningside finished with a team attacking mark of .292.
The Tigers wrap up their invitational with a 9 a.m. ET contest against Webber International University and then faces Lawrence Tech University at 11 a.m. ET inside Powell Athletic Center on Saturday morning.
