CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville's baseball team sees its road slate winding down as it has just five road games left this season with three coming this weekend against Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee.
The weekend series has been shifted slightly with the doubleheader of the weekend series now taking place on Friday with the first pitch moving up to 1 p.m. ET. The final game of the series is tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET; however, with rain in the forecast for Saturday there is a potential for game three to be played on Sunday starting at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Coming into the weekend series, the Tigers are 25-12 overall and 5-2 in the Mid-South Conference. Campbellsville has lost three of its last four games, while dropping three-straight games before winning the second half of a doubleheader at University of Rio Grande on Wednesday.
The Tiger offense has picked up as they have bolstered their team batting average over .300 and Campbellsville now hitting .308 as a team.
Logan Roberts has propelled the offense and now has a batting average of .387. The senior has recorded at least two hits in nine of the last 10 games to move his average from .259 all the way up to a team-best .387 average. Roberts also leads the team with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs.
Roberts' 10 long balls this season makes him the first Tiger since 2010 to record double-digit home runs in a season. Former Tigers, Richie Rowland and Brian Chase each hit 11 home runs in 2010.
Campbellsville has struggled driving in runs in key situations as they have left 274 runners on base this season averaging 7.4 runners left on base in 37 games this season. Over the last five games, the Tigers have left at least seven runners on base, including 14 in their loss to Rio Grande on Wednesday. Campbellsville's 14 runners left on base marked a new season high and also marks the 10th time the Tigers have left at least 10 runners on base.
On the mound, Campbellsville has a 3.71 ERA, but it has been on the rise over the last week after holding a team ERA of 3.24 at the start of action last Wednesday. The lowest team ERA the Tigers held this season was 2.79 following a doubleheader sweep of University of Northwestern Ohio on March 3.
DJ Wilson has paced the Tiger pitching staff this season allowing just five hits and an unearned run in 18 innings in the closing role.
Tyler Deason has a team-best 4-1 record and has a 2.37 ERA.
Cumberland comes into the weekend series winning 10 of its last 13 games and last four in a row. The Phoenix upset No. 10 Bryan College on Tuesday this week, just after sweeping Georgetown College on the road in their last MSC series. The three-game series at home for Cumberland is its final home games of the season as the Phoenix close the regular season with eight-straight road games.
On the season, Cumberland has a team batting average of .297 with Carlos Mosley recording a .352 average to the lead the team. Mosley is one of two players for the Phoenix to play and start in all 39 games this season as Rayden Sierra has also hit that mark, while hitting a MSC best 13 home runs – which is seventh most in the NAIA.
The Phoenix pitching staff has compiled an ERA of 4.35, but has allowed just a .237 batting average. Blake Young has a 2.60 ERA to lead the staff in 17-1/3 innings of work making just one start in eight appearances. Polo Portela (7-1) and Thomas Galart (7-2) have posted seven wins each and compiled ERAs of 3.00 and 2.95, respectively.
Last season at HIG Field, The Tigers took the first two games to start their conference slate, 7-3 and 1-0, before the Phoenix won the final game of the series, 11-3.
The MSC series between Campbellsville and Cumberland this weekend will now feature a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. ET, with the third game of the series tentatively slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET from Ernest L. Stockton Field.
