Tigers use hot bats and strong pitching to record doubleheader sweep of Cumberland, 17-6 and 5-3

LEBANON, Tenn. – Campbellsville produced season-high offensive numbers to take game one one over Cumberland University, 17-6, followed by a narrow 5-3 victory in game two to earn the doubleheader sweep at Ernest L. Stockton Field on Friday afternoon.
 
The Tigers (27-12, 7-2 Mid-South Conference) recorded a season-high 20 hits to score a season-best 17 runs in game one where each starter notched a hit and eight of the nine batters had at least two hits.

With the wind blowing out of Stockton Field at nearly 20 miles per hour, the long ball was a big part to the offensive attack for both teams. On the first pitch of the game, Matthew Valdez hit is 10th home run of the season, while Tyson Solis followed with a single on the next pitch.
 
The Tiger offense continued to roll with a RBI double from Logan Roberts, followed by a RBI single from Bryson Wallet to give Campbellsville an early 3-0 lead.
 
However, the long ball came alive early for the Phoenix (28-13, 6-5 MSC) as well, with Nick Mira going deep to start the inning and Rayden Sierra hit a home run two batters to cut the Tiger advantage.
 
Campbellsville put up three runs in the each of the first three innings to run out to a 9-3 lead. In the second inning, the Tigers scored three unearned runs, while Cumberland countered with a RBI ground out after a leadoff triple from Hector Morales.
 
In the top of the third inning, Chris Taitague singled out to left field to score David Montoya and then the Tigers proceed to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Roberts brought in a run with a walk, which was followed by Marco Murillo being hit by a pitch.
 
The first zero on the scoreboard was produced by Tyler Deason after a 1-2-3 bottom half of the third inning.
 
Pitching for both teams started to settle in with three-straight scoreless frames. However, the offense came back alive with with each team scoring three times in the seventh inning. Murillo drove in another Tiger run, while Wallet capped of the seventh for Campbellsville with his first home run of the year to drive in two runs.
 
Cumberland used a single, double and triple all in a row to plate its three runs with two outs and cut the Campbellsville lead to 12-6 heading into the eighth inning.
 
Valdez drove in his second run of the game with a double out to right-center field scoring Taitague – who went 4-for-5 in the first game. Then in the ninth, Campbellsville tacked on four more runs to take a 17-6 lead. Roberts started the inning with a solo home run and then Taitague hit a three-run shot. Roberts and Taitague each had four RBIs in the first game.
 
Roberts then took the rubber in the final inning retiring the side in order to seal the Tigers' 17-6 victory.
 
On the mound, Deason (5-1) threw six innings allowing three runs on five hits, while recording four strikeouts. Justin Phillips threw the seventh and eighth innings allowing three run on three hits and two walk, but struck out three. Roberts tossed a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
 
Thomas Galart (7-3) suffered the loss after going just 2-1/3 innings giving up eight runs – five earned – on 11 hits. Travis Dohr tossed 6-2/3 innings out of the bullpen allowing nine runs – eight earned – on nine hits.
 
Campbellsville 5, Cumberland 3
 
Offense was subsided in game two after a high scoring game one, but the Tigers still took an early 1-0 lead. In the first inning, Valdez was hit by a pitch in an 0-2 count then Solis singled out to left field. After back-to-back strikeouts, Murillo hit a shallow fly ball to the edge of the infield that was dropped by the Cumberland second basemen allowing Valdez to score from second, but the inning ended after Solis was tagged out at home plate.
 
With a 1-0 lead heading into the second inning, the long ball came back alive with Jared Schmidt hitting a home run to the opposite field and over the right field wall to tie the game.
 
The Tigers bounced right back with Roberts hitting a two-run home run to right-center field putting Campbellsville on top, 3-1. Roberts leads the team with 12 home runs and now has the most home runs in a season for Campbellsville since 2009.
 
In the fourth inning, Valdez and Solis drove in one run each to extend the Tiger lead to 5-1.
 
Cumberland got one run back back after a groundball double play scored Caleb Kellogg from third base. The Phoenix then made it 5-3 in the sixth inning after Sierra hit his second solo home run of the afternoon.
 
In a high strung seventh inning, DJ Wilson allowed just one hit and stranded the runner on third base to end the game, with the Tigers completing the sweep with a 5-3 win in game two. Wilson continues to be lights out at the end of the bullpen throwing 19 innings allowing just one unearned run and holding a 2-1 record with seven saves.
 
Parker Loutensock (4-0) grabbed the win allowing three runs – two earned – on seven hits, while notching five strikeouts. Wilson recorded two strikeouts in his inning of work.
 
Curtis Hoppe (4-3) suffered the loss after allowing five runs – four earned – on seven hits in his six innings. Hoppe led all pitchers on the day with seven strikeouts.
 
The final game of the series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET from Stockton Field in Lebanon, Tenn.
