OWENSBORO, Ky. – Campbellsville's offense continued to roll into the midweek with an 18-run outburst to post a season-best en route to beating Brescia University, 18-6, in seven innings on the road at Kamuf Park.
An eight-run sixth inning guided the Tigers (28-12) to the win via run-rule after seven innings. Campbellsville was just one hit shy of tying its season best with 19. The Tigers recorded 20 hits last Friday against Cumberland University, where they posted 17 runs – which was a season-best prior to Tuesday night.
Seven different Tigers notched multi-hit contests as the team hit .514 at the plate in the seven innings.
Campbellsville got off to fast start with a four-run first inning, where it finished with five hits. The Tigers had runners on the corners just two pitches into the game after a double from
Matthew Valdez, followed by a single from
Tyson Solis. A fielder's choice from
Ty Housden scored Valdez and then two batters later,
David Montoya drove in two runs with a double to left field.
The scoring concluded in the top of the first inning with a double by
Chris Taitague to score Montoya and give Campbellsville a 4-0 lead.
Errors plagued the Tigers throughout the contest as they recorded seven errors, which set a season high. Of the six runs allowed by Campbellsville, just one was an earned run. Two errors in the bottom of the first inning allowed Brescia to score one run without recording a hit.
The Tigers plated a run in the second inning off a Valdez sacrifice fly and then Montoya hit a home run in the third to give Campbellsville a 6-1 lead.
After being held scoreless in the fourth inning – one of two innings where the Tigers were held scoreless – Brescia hung a crocked number in the home half of the four-run fourth inning. Campbellsville had three errors allowing the Bearcats (10-28) to score four runs.
However, the Tigers battled back with a four-run top of the fifth inning to balance out the Brescia four spot. Two hits and a Bearcat error helped Campbellsville score four runs. Montoya flew out in foul ground to left driving in
Logan Roberts on the sacrifice fly and then Taitague reached on an error to keep the inning alive. A two-run single from
Shane Stober ended the four-run inning scoring Taitague and
DePaul Blunt.
Brescia got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning after another Tiger error allowed the Bearcats to make it a 10-6 contest.
Campbellsville broke the game open in the sixth inning with eight runs on seven hits. In the eight-run inning, the Tigers sent 13 hitters to plate. Back-to-back bases loaded walks got the scoring started with one out, then Taitague and Blunt notched back-to-back singles to score two more runs.
The sixth inning rolled on for Campbellsville with Montoya scoring on a wild pitch, followed by Stober, Valdez and Solis recording three-straight singles to each drive in a run.
Heading into the sixth inning and Campbellsville leading 18-6,
Anthony Arias inherited runners on the corners with no outs and struck out the first two batters before allowing a walk to load the bases. Arias worked out the out the jam and leaving the bases filled with Bearcats after a groundout. Brescia ended the game with 11 runners left on base.
Both sides were held scoreless in the seventh inning, where Mickey Hooper tossed a perfect bottom of the seventh inning for the Tigers to secure the 18-6 victory.
The seven errors from Campbellsville is the most in a game since April 6, 2014, when the Tigers recorded seven errors against University of Pikeville
Arias (2-0) earned the victory allowing just the one walk and striking out two in his inning of work.
Noah Horton got the start and threw two innings allowing one unearned run on two hits and walking a pair.
Mason (0-1) allowed six runs – five earned – in three innings to start as he allowed seven hits in the loss for the Bearcats.
Campbellsville returns home on Wednesday afternoon for a 4 p.m. ET start against No. 23 Tennessee Wesleyan University in a top-25 matchup at HIG Field.
