CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville's baseball team could not overcome a three-run sixth inning from Tennessee Wesleyan University as the Tigers dropped a 3-1 contest at HIG Field on Wednesday evening.
In the top-25 match, the 21st-ranked Tigers (28-13) recorded eight hits, but left nine runners on base. On the flipside, the 23rd-ranked Bulldogs (29-17) left 10 runners stranded, while only posting four hits.
Campbellsville took the early lead in the second inning after a sacrifice fly from
David Montoya scored
Marco Murillo for the Tigers lone run of the day. The Tigers had a strong third inning with three hits in the inning, but Tennessee Wesleyan got out of the jam without allowing a run.
On the mound,
Kirby Broadbent tossed a gem in his four-inning start. Broadbent was perfect in his four innings as he did not allow a hit or walk en route to retiring all 12 batters he faced – notching three strikeouts.
As a team, the Tigers sat down the first 13 batters in a row with the first base runner reaching on a walk from
Brandon Diaz in the fifth inning with one out. However, Diaz worked around a walk and a single to keep the Tigers ahead, 1-0, after five innings.
The Bulldogs came alive in the sixth inning with three runs on just one hit and a Campbellsville error. After back-to-back walks to start the frame, an attempted sacrifice bunt was corralled by
Brandon Douglas and he tried to get the lead runner a third base, but the throw went out to left field scoring Malik Stephens and tying the game, 1-1.
Two batters later, Aloysius Cruz doubled off the left-field wall to score two runs and giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. All three runs scored with no outs and
Anthony Arias came out the bullpen striking out three batters and walking one to end the threat and leaving the bases loaded.
Offense subsided for both teams as neither team scored over the final three innings. Campbellsville got its leadoff batter aboard in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but in each inning, the next three Tigers were put out in order and stranding the runners.
In the ninth inning Daniel Tolano closed the door on Campbellsville allowing just a two-out walk, but he picked his second save of the year and handed the Tigers a 3-1 defeat.
Tyson Solis and
Logan Roberts were the only players in the game with multi-hit contests as the two- and three-hole hitters for the Tigers each went 2-for-4.
After a perfect four innings from Broadbent to start, Diaz (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing two runs – one earned – in an inning out of the bullpen, while walking three batters. Arias posted a game-high five strikeouts in 2-1/3 innings, with each strikeout coming with the batter looking at strike three.
As a team, the Tigers compiled 11 strikeouts against Tennessee Wesleyan.
Daniel Smallwood got the start for the Bulldogs throwing 4-1/3 innings surrendering an unearned run and six hits. Chris Painter (1-1) earned the win after tossing 3-2/3 innings allowing just two hits out of the bullpen.
Campbellsville continues its four-game homestand on Friday at 5 p.m. ET to start a three-game series against Lindsey Wilson College at HIG Field.
