Horton’s 10th-inning heroics and Roberts’ two home run game paces Tigers to sweep of Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – A 10th-inning RBI single from Jalen Horton in game one and two home runs from Logan Roberts in game two paced the 19th-ranked Campbellsville baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Shawnee State University on the road, 3-2 and 8-4, at Branch Rickey Park on Monday afternoon.

Horton recorded three hits in the first game to go along with his RBI, while Roberts went 3-for-5 in game one then 3-for-4 in game two with three RBIs and two home runs. Roberts' two home runs in the second game were two of four home runs in the game of the Tigers (20-9, 3-1 Mid-South Conference).

Campbellsville 3, Shawnee State 2 (10 innings)

The Tigers fell behind early after the Bears (12-14, 1-7 MSC) tacked on a run in the first inning. Shawnee State took a page out of the Campbellsville playbook with a first-inning run off of Parker Loutensock. After a pair of groundouts back to Loutensock, the Bears started a two-out rally with with an infield single from Dalton Phillips, followed by a single in the right-centerfield gap from JT Boggs to put runners on the corners. Chase Thurber delivered an RBI single to put Shawnee State ahead, 1-0 after the first inning.

Campbellsville got the run back in the next half inning after Austin Peterson recorded one of his two RBIs on day. With two outs in the second inning, Horton reached base on a bunt single and after stealing second base, Peterson pulled a single into left field to score Horton. After Chris Taitague came into run for Peterson, Matthew Valdez singled out to centerfield, but Taitague was thrown out at the plate trying to score, which ended the the Tiger threat.

In the fourth inning, Campbellsville took their first lead of the game off of a bunt single from Peterson, which scored David Montoya. Montoya led off the inning with a single to left field and then after a groundout and a wild pitch moved Montoya third, a squeeze bunt brought home Montoya and Peterson reached base on the play.

Two innings later, Shawnee State tied the game once again. Boggs tripled to the right-field corner and then a groundout from Thurber scored the Bears second run of the game. Neither team could break the tie in the regulation nine innings, which forced the game into the 10th.

Campbellsville loaded the bases with two outs and brought Horton to the plate. The switching outfielder batted from the left side, where he slapped a 1-2 pitch to the opposite field, which scored Marco Murillo – who pinch ran for Roberts in the 10th inning. The Tigers only pushed the one run across, which was just enough as DJ Wilson (1-1) pitched a perfect ninth and 10th inning to earn the 3-2 victory for Campbellsville.

Loutensock earned the no decision in the start throwing six innings allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out five batters.

Jarrett James (2-2) was the losing pitcher in the contest after throwing the final 3-2/3 innings giving up just two hits and the one run in the 10th inning. Kyle Wisniewski started on the mound for Shawnee State throwing 6-1/3 innings giving up two runs on 10 hits.

Campbellsville 8, Shawnee State 4

Valdez got Campbellsville off to a strong start in the second half of the doubleheader with a leadoff home run on the third pitch of the ball game. The Tigers scored just the one run after a double play ended the inning, where runners were on the corners with one out.

Shawnee State continued its strong first innings with two runs on three hits. Mikey Hooper allowed the first four batters to reach base on three hits and a walk to put the Bears ahead 2-1 before Hooper recorded the first out. After the two Shawnee State runs, Hooper settled down and retired the next three batters in order.

Campbellsville regained the lead in the third inning with a two-run home run from DePaul Blunt. The lead did not last long as the Bears put together another rally where back-to-back singles put runner's on the corners and then with two outs, Hooper tried to throw over to first base on the pickoff attempt, but was called for a balk allowing Levi Jones – who went 4-for-4 in the second game – to score from third base.

Following a scoreless fourth inning from both teams, Roberts delivered a moon shot over the centerfield wall to score two runs for the Tigers. With a 5-3 lead, Blunt was hit by a pitch and he moved up to third base after a groundout from Tyler Deason. On the groundout, the Bears tried to tag Blunt out at second base for the double play, but the throw from first to second hit Blunt in the helmet and he was able to move up to third on the play. Montoya drove in Blunt on the infield single to push the Campbellsville lead to 6-3.

Shawnee State pulled back within two runs after an RBI groundout scored one run in the sixth inning. After Roberts allowed the run on the mound in the sixth inning, he came back in the top of the seventh with a solo shot to center field for his second home run in as many at-bats. Montoya drove in his second run of the ball game with a double to the gap in center field scoring Blunt – who reached on an error.

Roberts returned to the mound in the seventh inning, where he retired the first batter, but a fourth single from Jones prompted Wilson to come into the game with the Tigers leading 8-4. Wilson needed just two pitches to end the game as he induced a ground ball double play to secure the 8-4 victory for Campbellsville and completing the sweep.

Murillo (2-1) went two innings to earn the win out of the bullpen allowing just two hits and striking out three batters. Hooper threw three innings allowing three runs on seven hits in the start. Roberts went 1-1/3 innings allowing a run on two hits and Wilson faced one batter two get the final two outs of the game.

Zach Straley (2-3) was tagged with loss after allowing six runs on six hits in his 4-2/3 innings of work.

Campbellsville is slated to be back at home on Tuesday afternoon for a 4 p.m. ET contest against No. 9 Bryan College.
