Defense and pitching steps up big time in Lady Tigers sweep over Shawnee State

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Sometimes the bats aren't going to be awake but that's when the pitching and defense has to step up. That's what happened today, as No. 4 Campbellsville softball earned a pair of wins over Shawnee State.

The Lady Tigers improved to 38-5 with 5-0 and 5-2 victories over the Bears (22-18).

Campbellsville scored five runs in each but scratched those scores thanks to the Shawnee State defense and pitching. In the opener, CU scored four of the five runs off a pair of bases loaded walks and a pair of fielder's choices. In game two, the Lady Tigers scored three of the five runs off three SSU errors.

Neely Quint battled in the circle to improve her record to 24-0 overall. In game one, she went the distance for her 19th complete-game and seventh shutout. She allowed eight hits and struck out four in the win.

Morgan Gailor (12-5) gave up runs in the second and third but finished the game as strong as she could. Gailor sat down the final 13 batters and 15 of the final 16 en route to the victory. She allowed only three hits, two runs and struck out a season-high six.

The Lady Tigers and Bears get back in action on Saturday for Senior Day. Activities will begin at approximately 11:30 a.m. ET with first pitch of the series finale at Noon ET. Catch all the action on the CU Sports Network.

Game one: Campbellsville 5, Shawnee State 0

The lone run in the opener that CU scored without any help from the Bears came in the first inning. Jacqueline Roof led off the inning with a hit by pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI single by Tori Humphrey

CU scored another in the third, as Rebecca Miller scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

In the fourth, CU put up a three-spot but only put together two hits in the inning. Brianna Scott and Mia Aldridge singled and Dana Adkins walked to load the bases with no outs. Roof then grounded to shortstop and her throw home was in time to get Scott, but Megan Shupert's foot was not on home plate for the force out. Now with CU leading 3-0, Rebecca Miller and Alexis Smith both picked up the easiest RBI of their careers with based loaded walks.

Quint had to rely on her defense a lot today and they Lady Tigers pulled through in big ways. In the third, CU turned its first double play of the day, as Rood and Adkins turned a 6-4-3 twin-killing.

Quint then faced her first big jam of the day in the fifth. The Bears picked up three straight one-out singles, but Tori Humphrey turned the second double play of the day with a hard-shot grounder to her at third base.

Humphrey and Mia Aldridge led CU with two hits each in game one, while all four of the top batters in the orders delivered RBI.

Game two: Campbellsville 5, Shawnee State 2

The Lady Tigers once again used the short game to score in the first but took advantage of the first of three Shawnee State errors to lead 1-0. Roof singled, moved to second on another sac bunt by Miller and later scored on an error at third base off the bat from Humphrey.

The Bears then scored two runs in the second and third innings. A leadoff walk in the second came around to score on a two-out RBI hit by Megan Shupart – just her ninth hit of the year.

In the third, Marisa Brown delivered a double off the left field fence to score Ashtyn Saunders from first base.

The lead was Shawnee State's first in the series, but it was short-lived. The Bears committed two errors in the bottom half of the third to aid the CU offense. Humphrey drove in Roof with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Later in the inning, Smith hit a rocket to right field, but it was dropped to score another run and give CU a 3-2 lead.

Then the Lady Tigers went to the short-game to score a couple more. Brianna Scott and Mia Aldridge both laid down suicide squeeze bunts to score two more runs and giving Gailor a 5-2 lead.

That's all she would need, as she sat down the Bears 1-2-3 in the final four innings.
