CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Raudy Martinez belted a three-run home run in the third inning to post all three runs for Cumberlands, as Campbellsville suffered a 3-2 loss on Friday night at HIG Field.
The Tigers (31-14, 10-3 Mid-South Conference) compiled six hits in the game, which marked it fewest in a game since posting six hits in its loss to University of Pikeville on April 4. Of the first 45 games this season, Friday night was just the eighth time all season that Campbellsville was held to six hits or less.
David Montoya was the only player in the game to post a multi-hit game after going 2-for-3 and he drove in both Tiger runs against the Patriots (43-6, 13-1 MSC).
After a scoreless first stanza, Campbellsville got on the board first to grab a 1-0 lead.
Ty Housden reached base to start the second inning with a walk and just two batters later, Montoya hit a double off the wall in left field to drive in Housden – who was running on the pitch – from first base. The Tigers could not capitalize with Montoya at second base as the next two batters were retired in order.
Cumberlands' offense got rolling in the third inning with back-to-back infield singles to start the top of the third inning. After
Tyler Deason recorded the first out of the inning with runners on the corners, Martinez hit a three-run home run just over the wall in left-center field to grab a 3-1 lead. Martinez's long ball came on the ninth pitch of the at-bat in a 3-2 count.
Both Deason and the Patriot starter Josh Avila tossed gems on the mound as the score stayed at 3-1 heading into the eighth inning. With
Marco Murillo reaching on an error to start the eighth inning, with two outs, Montoya picked up another RBI with a single out to right field scoring Murillo from second base.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Avila retired the side in order to post the complete-game victory for Cumberlands, 3-2.
Avila (6-1) tossed all nine inning allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits, while striking out four batters.
Deason (6-2) allowed just the three runs from the home run, but he posted six strikeouts in his 6-1/3 innings.
Logan Roberts threw 1-2/3 innings out of the bullpen throwing a perfect five outs to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
DJ Wilson struck out the side in order in the top of the ninth inning throwing just 10 pitches on just one ball, which was the second to last pitch of the inning.
With the win for Cumberlands, it has won the Mid-South Conference regular-season title outright and will be the No. 1 seed in the MSC Tournament next week. Campbellsville is locked in at the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament next week.
The final two games of the regular-season take place on Saturday at HIG Field for Senior Day as the Tigers host Cumberlands for a doubleheader. Senior Day festivities are set to begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET, with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 3 p.m. ET.
