Baseball splits doubleheader against Cumberlands to closeout regular season on Senior Day

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville's baseball team split its final two games of the regular season against University of the Cumberlands, where the Tigers (32-15, 11-4 Mid-South Conference) won game one, 13-6, but dropped game two to the Patriots (44-7, 14-2 MSC), 3-2, on Senior Day at HIG Field.

Prior to the game, Campbellsville's baseball program honored its 10 seniors: Matthew Valdez, David Montoya, Brandon Diaz, Logan Roberts, Justin Phillips, DJ Wilson, Shane Stober, Jared Welander, Nick Johnston and Kirby Broadbent – who all played their final two games at HIG Field on Saturday.

The Tigers rallied in game one with four run innings in the seventh and eighth innings to earn the win, while Campbellsville's comeback fell short in a 3-2 loss in game two to finish out the regular season.

Campbellsville 13, Cumberlands 6

To start off the doubleheader, the Tigers jumped out early with a four-run first inning. Campbellsville loaded the bases with one out in the inning and Marco Murillo was hit by a pitch to score Valdez and then a double from Montoya scored Tyson Solis and Ty Housden. The first-inning scoring ended with an RBI groundout from Tyler Deason to push the Tigers ahead, 4-0.

The long ball carried the offense for Cumberlands with Alex Dominguez hitting a three-run home run to make it 4-3 in favor of the Tigers. Cumberlands' offense came alive once again in the fifth inning, where it loaded the bases. Dominguez delivered two more RBIs to give the Patriots the lead and then a double play with the bases loaded gave the Patriots a 6-4 edge heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The seniors continued to produce on Senior Day with Roberts pulling the Tigers back within a run after a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Campbellsville came back and regained the lead in the seventh inning with a four-run seventh inning. With two on and one out, Murillo reached base on an error from the Patriot third baseman and Solis came in to score on the error. Montoya continued his strong day at the plate with a three-run blast down the left-field line to give the Tigers a 9-6 advantage in the seventh inning.

With a three-run lead, Campbellsville's offense kept rolling with four more runs in the eighth inning. Roberts drove in two runs with a double down the left-field line and then Housden plated two more with a single out to right field to make it 13-6. Campbellsville could not add to its lead and left two runners stranded to end the frame.

Anthony Arias tossed a perfect ninth inning to seal the 13-6 victory for the Tigers.
Wilson (5-1) earned the win after throwing a scoreless two innings, punching out four batters. Parker Loutensock got the start and went four inning allowing six runs – four earned – on four hits, but he struck out seven batters. Phillips was the first Campbellsville pitcher out of the bullpen and he allowed just two hits in two innings of work.

Manny Castellano (5-1) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs – five earned – on four hits in two innings out of the bullpen. Zach Hurley started for the Patriots and surrendered five runs and nine hits in his five innings.

Cumberlands 3, Campbellsville 2

The long ball was the big story in game two with all five runs coming off home runs. Raudy Martinez started the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning with two outs to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

J.C. Santos followed with a two-run home run in the second inning to push the Patriots ahead, 3-0. Cumberlands had just two hits in the early going with both leaving the yard. Cumberlands then recorded its third hit in as many innings with a leadoff single from Roberto Prado to start the third inning. After that third hit from the Patriots, they would not record a hit the remainder of the contest.

However, Campbellsville's offense could not string together its hits after notching just one hit in all but two innings. In the first inning the Tigers had two hits, but could not generate a run. Then in the third inning, Campbellsville was sent down in order.

After the long ball came alive in the first two innings for the Patriots, it came alive for the Tigers in the final two innings. Roberts hit his second home run of the day – 15th of the season – to make it a 3-1 game in the sixth inning. Campbellsville then pulled with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning after Chris Taitague hammered a ball over the wall in left-center field. Stober worked a walk to keep the game alive with two outs in the seventh, but Valdez hit a fly ball out left field to end the Campbellsville threat and it dropped its regular-season finale, 3-2.

Of the two games the Tigers lost to the Patriots this weekend, both came in a 3-2 fashion.

Broadbent (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs and three hits, but he struck out three and walked two in his three-inning start. Roberts tossed three innings allowing just a walk and posted four strikeouts, while Wilson followed with just one walk in a scoreless seventh inning.

Anthony Martinez (6-0) went all seven innings for the victory, where he allowed seven hits and two runs.

Campbellsville now heads into postseason play where it is set to be the No. 2 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky., next week. The Tigers will take on seventh-seeded Shawnee State University at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday from Bowling Green Ballpark.
