CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Tyler Deason drove in
Matthew Valdez with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Campbellsville a 10-9 victory in game one and erase a seven-run deficit, but Pikeville came from behind in seventh inning of game two to split the doubleheader with a 5-4 win.
The Tigers (24-10, 5-2 Mid-South Conference) out hit the Bears (20-14, 4-5 MSC) 16-9 in game one. However, Pikeville flipped the script in game two with 10 hits, compared to six from Campbellsville.

The Bears got off to a strong start with a run in the fourth inning, followed by back-to-back four spots in the second and third innings to push their lead to 9-2.
After the Bears scored once in the first inning,
Marco Murillo singled out to centerfield with the bases loaded and two outs to score the two Tiger runs.
However, Pikeville scored its four runs in the second inning on five hits, then scored the four runs in the third inning on just two hits and a Tiger error.
Trailing 9-2 in the bottom of the third inning, Murillo delivered a two-run home run just over the wall in left field to score two runs for Campbellsville and cut into the Pikeville lead.
The Tigers continued to rally with another run in the fourth inning after
Logan Roberts hit a sacrifice fly out to centerfield, scoring Valdez on the play.
Campbellsville's crooked number came in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single from
Brandon Douglas, followed by another sacrifice fly from Roberts to bring the Tigers within a run at 9-8.
The bullpen for Campbellsville came up big as they threw up six-straight zeros to keep the Tigers within striking distance over the final six innings.
After being held scoreless during the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, the Campbellsville offense came back alive in the ninth inning. Pikeville went to Dalton Dahley – who would later start game two of the doubleheader – in the ninth inning with a 9-8 lead.
Dahley struggled with control to start the ninth inning after he walked Douglas then hit Valdez to start the inning.
Tyson Solis bunted for a base hit to load bases with no outs in the ninth inning. Roberts drew a bases loaded walk to score
Chris Taitague – pinch runner for Douglas – and tie the game at nine. Deason came up to the plate with the bases loaded and the winning run just 90 feet away. Deason delivered a deep fly ball to left field were Alec Barba recorded to the out, but the ball was deep enough to score Valdez and give the Tigers a 10-9 victory.
DJ Wilson (2-1) pitched a perfect ninth inning to record the win, while the trio of
Kirby Broadbent,
Justin Phillips and Wilson allowed just one run on one hit over the final 6-2/3 innings. Phillips tossed a perfect 3-2/3 innings, while Broadbent allowed three walks, a hit and an unearned run during his two innings.
Roberts started for Campbellsville and allowed five runs on seven hits in 1-1/3 innings.
Dahley (3-5) was tagged with loss after allowing the two ninth-inning runs on two hits and two walks, while recording just the one out to end the game. Aaron Hedgecock started the game allowing nine hits and five runs in 3-2/3 innings.
Pikeville 5, Campbellsville 4
In the seven-inning game of the doubleheader, Campbellsville got off to the early lead as it held a 4-0 edge through four innings.
David Montoya singled out to left field to score
DePaul Blunt in the second inning, while a single from Roberts in the third inning put the Tigers ahead, 2-0. Each of the first two runs were unearned as Pikeville's error came back to hurt Dahley on the mound.
Pitching on just three days rest,
Parker Loutensock was dealing through the first four innings as he allowed just two hits – both coming in the third inning. Despite allowing three walks, Loutensock did not allow a run in his four innings of work.
Campbellsville took a 4-0 lead with a bases loaded sacrifice fly from
Shane Stober in the bottom of the fourth inning. Solis scored Montoya two batters later with the bases loaded once again on a fielder's choice.
The Pikeville rally started in the fifth inning with the Bears scoring two runs on three hits with
Mikey Hooper coming out of the bullpen for Campbellsville.
Hooper worked around a two-out single in the sixth inning to retire the side, but the Bears completed their rally with three runs in the final inning.
Hooper allowed a two-RBI single with the bases loaded and then
Tyler Deason – who earned the win against Bryan on Tuesday – came in for a batter, where he allowed a run-scoring single. Murillo came in from right field and recorded the final two outs to limit the damage heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Campbellsville recorded a one-out walk, but could not push across a tying run as Pikeville escaped with a 5-4 victory avoiding the doubleheader sweep and spoiling the three-game series sweep for the Tigers.
Hooper (3-3) allowed five runs on seven hits in the loss after throwing 2-1/3 innings.
Dahley tossed the first three innings allowing four runs – two earned – on five hits. Chase Robinson (2-0) grabbed the win after allowing just one hit and walking three over the final four innings.
The loss for the Tigers ends their winning streak at seven games.
Campbellsville is back in action on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET against Midway University from HIG Field.
