CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Fourth-ranked Lady Tiger softball outscored Cumberlands 33-0 on the weekend and completed the sweep over the Patriots with another pair of run-rule victories.
Jacqueline Roof parked the first home run of the series in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one to give CU a 9-0 win. In game two,
Jordan Ison secured the sweep with a double off the centerfield fence for the 8-0 victory.
Roof tallied two hits, scored four times and drove in two on the day, while
Tori Humphrey went 2-for-5 but her two hits were both home runs – a solo shot and a three-run homer in game two. She finished with six RBI on the day.
Alexis Smith drove in three runs, while
Ryley Whitney finished with two runs batted in.
Neely Quint improved her record to a perfect 19-0 – which matches her career-high in a single season. Quint went the distance, allowing five hits and struck out six in game one.
Morgan Gailor also was stellar in the circle, earning her second straight complete-game shutout by allowing three hits and striking out five.
The Lady Tigers get back in action next week with a pair of conference games. CU travels to Georgetown College on Tuesday, April 10 for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. ET. CU also hits the road for Kentucky Christian next Friday-Saturday, April 13-14, in Grayson, Ky.
Game one: Campbellsville 9, Cumberlands 0
The Lady Tigers scored three single runs in the first, second and third innings before putting up a four-spot in the fourth. CU, which is one of the best home run hitting teams in the country, used small ball in the first game before breaking out the long ball to walk-off.
Roof singled to start the game and moved to second on
Rebecca Miller's sacrifice bunt.
Alexis Smith came through with two outs to drive in Roof and give CU a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Ison singled and advanced to second on a
Dana Adkins sac bunt. She later scored an unearned run on the first of two Cumberlands' errors.
In the third, Miller tripled to right field and scored on an RBI groundout by Humphrey to give CU a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Tigers broke out in the fourth with four runs. CU brought all nine Lady Tigers to the plate and scored a couple two-out runs.
Dana Adkins drove in
Brianna Scott, while Humphrey was hit by a pitch with bases loaded before
Alexis Smith drove in two more with two outs with a double.
In the sixth,
Ryleigh Oldham was hit by a pitch and Roof followed with her fourth home run of the season to secure the 9-0 win.
Game two: Campbellsville 8, Cumberlands 0
CU once again scored crooked numbers in the first, second and fifth innings to run-rule Cumberlands in five innings.
Sydney Pennycuff started in the circle and could not find the zone early. She hit Roof, allowed a single to Miller and then walked Smith to load the bases with one out. Whitney was hit by a pitch to score the game's first run and later Scott put CU ahead 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
CU used the long ball in the second and third innings. Humphrey homered to center field to score Miller and Oldham, while Whitney hit a solo moon shot to left.
CU spotted Gailor a 6-0 lead in the first three innings and she sat down the first nine Patriots. But Cumberlands started to string a few hits together. Gailor allowed a double and a pair of walks in the inning before working out of the first of two jams.
The second jam came in the fifth, as a couple of singles put runners on second and third but Gailor picked up two of her five strikeouts to end that threat.
In the fifth, Humphrey hit a solo shot to lead off the frame and was followed with a
Kalin Bottoms walk and
Jordan Ison double for the 8-0 victory.
