BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Third-seeded Reinhardt University upset second-seeded Campbellsville, 8-3, after using a quartet of four-run innings during the second game of the NAIA Baseball Opening Round – Bowling Green Bracket at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Ty Housden led the Tigers (36-16) with three hits on the day and
Logan Roberts notched two hits including a two-run home run. Daniel Rodriguez had three hits for the Eagles (39-14) and scored three times.
After the first two Tigers were retired in order, Campbellsville's rally began with a double off the left wall from
Logan Roberts and
Marco Murillo singled up the middle to place runners at the corners. Housden drove in the first run with a single back up the box scoring Roberts. On the play, Murillo moved up the third and Housden climbed up to second with a 1-0 lead for Campbellsville.
However, the Tiger rally was cut off after they loaded the bases and
Bryson Wallet grounded out to third base.
Reinhardt came back in the top of the third inning to grab the lead. Without the ball leaving the infield, the Eagles loaded the bases with a two infield singles and an error on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Sherman Graves sent a single out to centerfield allowing two runs to come. During the next at-bat, Campbellsville got out of the jam with a double play to keep the score 2-1 in favor of Reinhardt.
With the Tiger bats going quite since the first inning, the Eagle bats started to heat up with another two runs in the fifth inning. After loading the bases once again, Jacob Cagle had a two-RBI single to put Reinhardt ahead, 4-1. During their first five at-bats, the Eagles posted eight hits, compared to just five from Campbellsville in that span.
Roberts gave the Tigers some momentum in the bottom of the fifth inning to cancel out the Eagle two spot after he belted a two-run home run just over wall in left-center field to cut the Campbellsville deficit to 4-3 after five innings.
The back-and-forth battle continued with Reinhardt loading the bases once more and Kaleb Swayze driving two runs with two outs to push the Eagles ahead by three again.
Reinhardt's bats came back alive in the eighth inning with two more runs to take an 8-3 lead. All four of the the Eagles run scoring hits came from singles, with the first three driving in two runs.
Campbellsville's offense stayed quite as the Tigers dropped their first game of the national tournament to Reinhardt, 8-3.
Tyler Deason (6-3) suffered the loss after allowing six runs on 11 hits in his six-inning outing.
Dylan Powers (11-3) picked up the win for the Eagles after surrendering three runs – one earned – in 6-2/3 innings of work. Powers allowed seven hits and struck out four.
Reinhardt stays in the winner's bracket to face the winner of University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma and Bellevue University at 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday morning.
Campbellsville slips into an elimination game tonight at 7:30 p.m. CT against Midland University.
