Smith's solo homer, Gailor's gem and Quint's save lead Lady Tigers to 1-0 win in eight innings

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Alexis Smith uncorked a scoreless tie in the eighth inning and one of the best pitching staffs in the country teamed up to shut down Madonna University in the NAIA Softball Opening Round to earn a 1-0 win.

Smith delivered her team-leading 11thhome run of the season in the eighth inning and Morgan Gailor (17-6) was gutless in the circle holding Madonna scoreless over 7.1 innings.

Gailor struck out six Crusaders – matching a season-high and tossed 108 pitches on the day. She only walked one – the first batter of the game – and had an intentional walk in the seventh before getting out of a jam.

Madonna had multiple opportunities to plate a few runs but Gailor and Neely Quint teamed up to shut them down. The leadoff hitter reached for the Crusaders on four separate occasions and the two-hitters Jordan Johnson and Emma Sikena combined for four sacrifice bunts, but the CU duo was able to keep the Crusaders off the scoreboard.

The biggest of them all came in the eighth. Gailor allowed a leadoff single and an error on a fielder's choice put runners on first and second with no outs. Emma Sikena delivered a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position and head coach Shannon Wathen decided to go to her ace Neely Quint. Quint earned a strikeout and then caught a shoe-top liner to earn her third save of the season.

The Lady Tigers also had multiple opportunities to scratch runs. CU had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth, runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth and sixth but were unable to score.

In the seventh, CU stranded two more, but Smith delivered the solo shot to uncork the scoreless tie and propel CU to the win.

Campbellsville will now play two-seeded Faulkner University tonight at approximately 7 p.m. ET at Buchanon Park. Fans can tune in on the CU Sports Network – www.campbellsvilletigers.com/watch.

Faulkner defeated University of Rio Grande 1-0 – also in eight innings – this morning.
