CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville baseball team starts its postseason slate this week at the Mid-South Conference Tournament, where the Tigers are the second seed in the tournament and take on seventh-seeded Shawnee State University at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The seven-team, double elimination tournament begins on Thursday and runs through Sunday, with each game taking place at the Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green, Ky.
Campbellsville enters the postseason with a record of 32-15 and finished second in the MSC after posting a conference mark of 11-4. The Tigers dropped two of three games against University of the Cumberlands – who won the regular-season title – last weekend to cap off the regular season.
On offense, Campbellsville's offense was stifled in its two loses as it scored just two runs in each of the two losses, but the Tiger offense came alive in game two of the series against the Patriots, where they scored 13 runs in the win compiling 15 hits. In the two losses, Campbellsville combined for 13 hits.
As a team this season, the Tigers have a team batting average of .313 with
Logan Roberts recording a team-best .378 batting average, while he is also leading the way with 15 home runs and 39 RBIs.
Matthew Valdez and
Ty Housden join Roberts in hitting over .350 this season with batting averages of .352 and .351, respectively. The Tigers rank third in the NAIA in fielding percentage at .974, which is also the best in the MSC this season.
On the mound, the Tigers have a .228 opponent batting average, which ranks 10th in the nation, while their 3.59 ERA is 16th overall in the NAIA. Campbellsville leads the Mid-South Conference in both categories heading into the postseason.
Parker Loutensock has led the starting pitchers this season with a 2.59 ERA and 55 strikeouts.
DJ Wilson has a 0.33 ERA in 27 innings, where he also has a 5-1 record and eight saves. His five wins are second on the team and he ranks 14th in the NAIA in saves.
Shawnee State comes into the conference tournament with a record of 14-28, while rounding out the MSC standings in seventh place at 1-16. The Bears have lost their last four games and 20 of their last 23 games since the start of conference action. Shawnee State has a team batting average of .269, with Levi Jones posting a .355 batting average to lead the way. Both Dalton Phillips and JT Boggs pace the team in runs batted in with 25 each.
The Bear pitching staff has a team ERA of 7.73 and allows the opposition to hit .322 at the plate. Kyle Wisniewski has posted a 3-4 record on the mound to lead the way and has a 5.29 ERA. Casey Claflin has notched a 2.84 ERA in 11 appearances out of the bullpen.
Earlier this season, Campbellsville swept Shawnee State in a two games in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Tigers needed extra innings to win the first game of the doubleheader, where
Jalen Horton recorded the game-winning hit with an RBI single en route to a 3-2 victory. In game two, Campbellsville posted an 8-4 victory to start the month of April and complete the sweep.
The winner of Shawnee State and Campbellsville takes on the winner of third-seeded Cumberland University and sixth-seeded University of Pikeville on Friday at 1 p.m. ET. The loser of the two opening round matchups will faceoff on Friday at 10 a.m. ET in an elimination game.
The final opening round contest features fourth-seeded Lindsey Wilson College and fifth-seeded Georgetown College. The winner will take on top-seeded Cumberlands – who earned a bye into the second round.
First pitch on Thursday between Campbellsville and Shawnee State is set for 1 p.m. ET from Bowling Green Ballpark.
