CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville baseball team is set to round out its 2018 season at the NCCAA World Series starting on Wednesday, May 23 in Easley, South Carolina at J.B. "Red" Owens Sports Complex and Easley High School.
The Tigers are the third overall seed in the 10-team field after earning an at-large selection into the field. The World Series field is split into two, five-team pools where four teams move onto the semifinals, followed by the championship game on Saturday.
Campbellsville starts the tournament on Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET against University of St. Katherine, followed by a 4 p.m. ET against Hiwassee College. On Thursday, the Tigers face Colorado Christian University at 8 p.m. ET and then face Warner University on Friday morning at 10 a.m. ET to finish out pool play.
Entering the NCCAA World Series, Campbellsville is 40-17 overall and finished the NAIA Baseball Opening Round after dropping the championship game to Reinhardt University, 5-1. The Tigers have four individuals with a batting average of over .350.
Bryson Wallet has a .357 mark, followed by
Ty Housden and
Tyson Solis hitting .355 each.
Matthew Valdez and
Logan Roberts each have over 40 RBIs and more than 10 home runs for Campbellsville.
The Tiger pitching staff has a 3.92 ERA this season, while allowing the opposition to it .236.
Parker Loutensock has a record of 5-0 this season in 13 starts and guides the team with 65 strikeouts.
Campbellsville's first opponent is St. Katherine who is seeded sixth in the field and earned an at-large selection into the field. The Firebirds come into the postseason with a record of 34-15 and dropped a 3-2 contest to Biola University in the West Regional. Gerardo Torreblanca paces the team with a .480 batting average and is second on the team with 41 RBIs. On the mound, St. Katherine has a 3.91 ERA, where Kyle Huett has a 7-1 record and a 1.21 ERA.
Hiwassee is the 10th seed in the field after earning the final at-large selection in the field. Hiwassee posted a 29-17 record this season and finished second in the Mideast Regional after falling to Bluefield College, 16-6. Hogan Townsend leads the offense this season a batting average of .384, while Josh Watson has a team-best 44 RBIs. Bryson Morgan posted a team-high five wins on the mound, where he has a 3.97 ERA.
Colorado Christian is the highest-seeded team in Pool B and is the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament. The Cougars recorded a 23-27 mark this season a rolled to the Central Region title to capture their spot in the NCCAA World Series. Scotty Wright paced Colorado Christian with a .369 batting average and Austin Maltby is just behind with a .341 average, while leading way with 53 RBIs and nine home runs. The Cougar pitching staff has a 6.81 ERA, where Joey Loranger and Evan Fink have matching 6-5 records for Colorado Christian.
Warner is the final pool play opponent for the Tigers after the Royals won the South Regional to earned the seventh seed in the tournament. The Royals went 30-24 this season and beat Emmanuel College, 11-8, for the South Region title. Junior Fermin has a .331 batting average this season, where he played in 52 of the teams 54 games this year. Fermin drove in 50 runs and finished second on the team with 11 doubles. Anthony Torres have a 2.25 ERA and has nine saves in 16 appearances out of the bullpen.
Last season at the NCCAA World Series, Campbellsville made run to the championship game before dropping a 7-6 contest to Oklahoma Baptist University.
Prior to the action on field starting on Wednesday, the Tigers are set to take part in a Christian Service Project on Tuesday in Easley, S.C.
