Defense costs Lindsey Wilson but it prevails for No. 4 Lady Tigers; CU punches ticket to MSC finals

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Campbellsville scored three of its runs off four Lindsey Wilson errors and the top-seeded Lady Tigers punched their ticket to the Mid-South Conference finals tomorrow evening with a 9-6 victory.

The win improves Campbellsville's record to 44-8 overall and gives CU a 3-2 season series lead over rival Lindsey Wilson. Campbellsville will now play in the MSC finals on Monday evening at 5 p.m. ET at Michael Buchanon Park.

Lindsey Wilson will face the winner of Georgetown College and Cumberland University in the loser's bracket finals later tonight and the winner of that contest will face Campbellsville tomorrow.

Fans can tune into the Campbellsville University Sports Network, 88.7 The Tiger and CampbellsvilleTigers.com/watch for pregame coverage tomorrow starting at 4:45 p.m. ET.

MSC Pitcher of the Year Neely Quint (27-2) battled her hind-end off all day. The senior from Brookport, Ill. was dominant through five innings, allowing only four hits and throwing 45 pitches through those five frames. Lindsey Wilson did score six runs in the final two innings, but CU's offense did its part in providing some cushion.

Three-time MSC Player of the Year Jacqueline Roof was joined by MSC Freshman of the Year Ryley Whitney, Jordan Ison, Ryleigh Oldham and Dana Adkins with two hits each. Roof, Oldham and Adkins drove in one, while Whitney drove in two to lead CU at the plate.

Adkins also played a stellar third base to eliminate a few big innings for the Blue Raiders.

The Lady Tigers got on the board in the first inning thanks to a pair of errors by the Blue Raiders.

Jacqueline Roof's fly ball to right was dropped by Cassie Matlock and she took second on a passed ball. Rebecca Miller's sacrifice bunt pushed the runner to third and a two-out ground ball from Ryley Whitley ran up the arm of LWC third baseman Alaeni Ray, allowing the run to score.

Quint worked around a pair of baserunners for the Blue Raiders in the third after a chopper up the middle by Amy Rogers and a beautiful bunt single from Cassie Kooker. Callum Pilgrim grounded into a fielder's choice and Lyric Houston bounced out, ending the threat with the Lady Tigers holding into a 1-0 advantage.

Campbellsville took advantage of another LWC miscue in the third after a leadoff single to center from Roof, who moved to second on another sac bunt by Miller. Alexis Smith's grounder to first pushed the runner to third and Whitney's line drive to short was dropped by Gold Glove recipient Kalli Harris, allowing Roof to score the second unearned run of the contest for a 2-0 Lady Tiger lead.

In the fourth, Jordan Ison beat out a chopper in front of the pitcher's circle and Ryleigh Oldham doubled down the left field line. Ison was tagged out at the plate on a squeeze attempt by Kelly Wheeler, but Dana Adkins dumped a shallow single down the right field line, plating a run and putting CU ahead, 3-0.

Roof and Miller followed with RBI singles, Roof's through the hole on the left side and Miller's a chopper up the middle, extending the Campbellsville advantage to 5-0. Whitley lifted a single to shallow center with two outs, pushing across Roof for a 6-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson cut the deficit in half with three hits, but the trouble started with a walk to Lyric Houston. Quint hit Ray and Sydney Fourman's single to right loaded the bases with no outs.

Cassie Matlock then singled to center, plating two runs, but Harris' grounder down the third base line turned into a huge 5-3 double play for Adkins and CU. Amber Hancock's single to right scored the final run of the inning, making it 6-3 Campbellsville.

With Lindsey Wilson picking up momentum, the Lady Tigers responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to end it in a hurry. The inning started with a single to center by Adkins before Roof and Miller were both hit, loading the bases. Smith's grounder to short was booted for Harris' second error of the day, allowing a run to come across, and Whitney's single to left plated Roof. With two outs Oldham's blooper over the circle dropped for a hit, scoring Miller for a 9-3 advantage.

Lindsey Wilson didn't go down easily in the seventh, though. Kooker singled just inside the third base bag to start the frame and Pilgrim followed with a double to deep left, plating a run and ending the day for Quint.

Morgan Gailor entered for just the second time this season in relief and shut the door. She allowed a walk to Houston and Ray grounded to second, pushing the runners to second and third, before Fourman's bloop single behind first base scored two runs.

With the game-tying run on deck, Gailor then picked up a ground out to second base and showed off her vertical in the circle by snagging a hard-shot up the middle to seal the win, 9-6.

The Lady Tigers will play for their fifth MSC Tournament championship and first since 2016.
