Valdez, Solis, Wilson and Roberts earn NCCAA Baseball All-American Honors

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The National Christian College Athletic Association has announced the 2018 NCCAA Baseball All-America Teams and Campbellsville University has four Tigers earn second or third team honors.

Campbellsville has a trio of Tigers on the Second-Team – DJ Wilson, Tyson Solis and Matthew Valdez. Logan Roberts is the lone selection on the Third-Team.

Wilson found his role on the team in the back-end of the bullpen and flourished as the Tigers' closer. In his 26 appearances, he finished the year with a 7-2 record, 10 saves and 1.78 ERA – all team-highs. In his 50.2 innings pitched, Wilson allowed only 10 earned runs and struck out 48, while opponents hit .198.

The 26 appearances and 10 saves ranks third in the single-season record books, while his ERA is fifth. In addition, he finished with two saves in 2017 to total 12 for his career – ranking third in the career record book.

His 10 saves this season also ranked seventh in the country at the NAIA level as he also was named CU's fourth-ever NAIA First-Team All-American.

Solis and Valdez had stellar years at the plate both breaking the single-season record for hits in a year. Both of them broke Former Tiger Enrique Lazu's record for most hits in a season after recording 85 hits during the 1999 season.

On the season, Solis finished with a .363 batting average and 89 hits to pace Campbellsville on offense. He also finished with 37 RBIs – third on the team – and posted an on-base percentage of .409. In addition, he was second on the team with 20 stolen bases and led the Tigers with 28 multi-hit games.

Solis also earned NCCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player in the World Series last month.

Valdez proved to be one of the best shortstops to ever come through the program. He finished with 86 hits to break Lazu's record and ended the year hitting .341. He was also second on the team by hitting 14 home runs, drove in 44 runs and compiled 26 multi-hit games. Valdez also held the longest hitting streak on the season at 14 games and reached base in 35 straight games.

The biggest number from Valdez was his leadership and the top of the batting order. He hit .551 while leading off this season with 59 hits in 107 at bats.

Roberts was the big bat in the lineup and led CU with 17 home runs – which is tied for second in a single-season. Roberts hit .309 for CU this season and drove in a team-high 49 runs.

On the mound, Roberts carried a 3.82 ERA, went 3-1 and struck out 57 batters in 37.2 innings.

CU won its ninth Mid-South Conference Tournament championship enroute to hosting the NAIA Opening Round at Bowling Green Ball Park. The Tigers were one win away from the NAIA World Series but ended up winning their first NCCAA World Series in program history in Easley, S.C. in late May.
