Miracle wins Gold at Spanish Grand Prix; Team USA claims team title over Russia

MADRID, Spain — The U.S. women's freestyle team ran away with the team title at the 2018 Grand Prix of Spain, claiming eight medals, including three gold. Campbellsville's Kayla Miracle earned one of the gold medals and Charlotte Fowler competed as well.

Miracle won the title at 62kg, while Sarah Hildebrandt (53 kg) and Tamyra Mensah (68 kg) claimed the other golds for the U.S. Fowler finished 11th at 50 kg.

At 62 kg, Miracle, this year's Final X runner-up, met up with U.S. teammate and two-time World Team member Mallory Velte in the finals. It was the fifth time these two have met up since April.

After losing to Velte two matches to one at Final X last month, Miracle bounced back, grabbing a 6-2 win for the Grand Prix title. Miracle now holds a 3-2 lead over Velte in the series. Last year, Miracle finished with a bronze medal at the Grand Prix.

In her other three matches, Miracle defeated Ayaulym Kassymova (Kazakhstan), Jessica Brouillette (Canada) and Inna Trazhukova (Russia).

"Kayla exemplifies the rare qualities that make a true champion. Her work ethic, heart, and commitment to excellence are unparalleled," said coach Lee Miracle.

"She defeated some very tough opponents just to make the finals. Then she had to defeat two-time World Team Member Mallory Velte to win it. Today was an impressive demonstration of a combination of position, technique, and scrambling ability."

Fowler loss to Dominika Szynkowska (Poland) on her first round.

"Fowler is learning the Senior level scene," said Miracle. "I believe she will acclimate quickly and climb the ladder. I am excited for her future at Campbellsville and the Senior level."

In the team standings, the U.S. earned 160 points, outscoring second-place Russia by 45 points. Rounding out the top five were Kazakhstan in third with 99, Canada in fourth with 80 and Sweden in fifth with 68.
