Campbellsville women's volleyball wins NAIA Opening Round rematch with Texas Wesleyan

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Julia Fonseca was the lone Lady Tiger with double figure kills but there were four to reach 10-plus digs as Campbellsville defeated Texas Wesleyan on Saturday morning by a 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22) score. This was a rematch of the 2017 NAIA Opening Round matchup in which the Rams came out victorious, 3-2.

Fonseca was one of a number of Lady Tigers who shined this morning as she finished with 11 kills and three total blocks. Jaimie Thompson added a team high 28 digs and Paige Merrick (16), Kaite Johnosn (15) and Savannah Moss (12) all finished in double figures in digs. Merrick finished with her second double-double in three matches this season as she added 33 assists to go with her 16 digs.

Campbellsville jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the opening set before the Rams went on a 7-2 to pull within one point at 13-12. Three straight service errors by the Rams led to a 7-1 Campbellsville run and a 20-13 lead, the teams then battled back and forth to the 25-18 Lady Tigers win in set one.

The second set was tight as both teams stayed within two of each other to an 11-11 score. Johnson then served four straight Lady Tiger points highlighted by two service aces. That sparked a 7-2 run by Campbellsville that put the Lady Tigers up 18-13. Kills by Fonseca and Merrick highlighted the last seven Campbellsville points as CU won the second set 25-18 as well.

After Texas Wesleyan took the third set by a 25-20 score the Lady Tigers rebounded for the 25-22 win in the fourth set and took the match by a 3-1 score. The Rams jumped out to an 18-10 lead before the Lady Tigers rallied with a 15-4 run. Campbellsville scored the final seven points of the set, including the final four from service aces by Ashlyn Flock and then kills by Fonseca and Maria Coelho. The 7-0 run to end the set finished off the Rams 25-22 in the fourth set.

They are currently underway in their final match of the MSC Crossover Challenge against Point University.
