Five turnovers haunt Campbellsville in season-opening loss to Faulkner, 16-10

Faulkner won the turnover battle, as they scored all 16 points in the final 3:44 of the second quarter

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A combined nine turnovers turned what could have been one of the best NAIA matchups to start the 2018 season into a sloppy offensive game and No. 24 Faulkner University took advantage of scoring seven points of five Campbellsville miscues to upend the Tigers, 16-10. 
 
In front of a packed Finley Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the 19th-ranked Tigers fell victim to five turnovers and Faulkner scored all 16 of its points in the final 3:44 in the second quarter. 
 
The 10 points is the lowest in a game since the 2015 NAIA Playoff game against Marian when CU lost, 44-7. 
 
Campbellsville had an early lead after a Kendon Young 14-yard rush into the west end zone and Noah Bicksler nailed one of his two field goal attempts from 35 yards out for Campbellsville's only 10 points. 
 
 
 
Graduate senior Jeremy Hinds, making his first career start at quarterback, had a solid game passing for 195 yards on 21-of-34 but fell victim to a pair of interceptions – one of which while the Tigers were inside the five-yard line and a jump-ball was picked off by D.J. Joseph. The other came after a ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage and ended another drive. 
 
The Tigers rushing attack dominated early, out-gaining Faulkner 105 to 47 overall. Freshman Ormoni Zanders led CU with 46 yards on 15 carries, while junior Kendon Young had seven carries for 44 yards and a touchdown run of 14 yards. 
 
On defense, the Tigers picked up multiple stops in the fourth quarter to hold Faulkner to the six-point deficit. Outside of the 16 points scored in 3:44 of the second frame, the defense was spectacular. Darius Moore led CU with 12 tackles, while Parish Howell, Jr. finished with eight along with Marcus McCants. 
 
The Tigers took advantage early and scored all 10 points off the four Faulkner turnovers but costly penalties and red zone miscues halted multiple drives. 
 
After Young put the Tigers ahead 7-0, that score stood until the 3:44 mark in the second quarter. Faulkner needed a halfback pass to get its offense going, as Jacob Pigg hauled in a Reagan Amos ball for a 14-yard touchdown. 
 
Just over a minute later and the score tied at seven, Faulkner's D'Arie Johnson blocked a punt and Jacob Pigg recovered but his foot was just out of the back of the end zone to record a safety for the Eagles. 
 
On the ensuing free kick, the Eagles went 61 yards on nine plays and only took 1:05 off the clock to lead, 16-7. 
 
The third quarter saw four fumbles overall and Campbellsville recovering the two Faulkner miscues. But the Tigers couldn't take advantage. Austin Hash recovered a fumble with 11:55 left in the third quarter and Campbellsville starting a drive on the Eagles' 23-yard line but Bicksler missed a 35-yard field goal wide left. 
 
With 4:55 left in the third quarter, Chrishun Young sacked Mason Blocker and Hash was there for his second recovery. On the ensuing drive, which started on the Faulkner 47, the Tigers were able to get points after Bicksler made his first field goal of the season – a ricocheted off the left upright that trickled just over the goal post.
 
The Tigers' defense came up big once more with 45 seconds left in the third frame. Mahari Sturgis went high above B.J. Turner to haul in his first interception of the season. But Campbellsville gave the ball right back as Hinds fumbled on third down and Faulkner recovered. 
 
On the final four drives of the game, both teams went four-and-out and Faulkner was able to hold onto the victory. 
 
The Tigers will now hit the road next week for their longest road trip of the year. CU travels to Babson Park, Fla. to face Mid-South Conference Sun Division opponent Webber International University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET with the Tiger Tailgate Show beginning at 1:00.
