ADRIAN, Mich. – Three Lady Tigers finished in double digit kills led by
Julia Fonseca with 15,
Yelysaveta Sharkova (Liza) had 14 and
Maria Coelho had 11 to lead them to a 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22) victory. The Lady Tigers advance to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in four set matches while Rochester College falls to 0-6 on the young season.
Fonseca finished the match with a .538 attacking percentage following her 15 kills with only one error in 26 total attacks. Sharkova recorded her first career performance with double digit kills as she also had a .367 attack percentage. Coelho was the only player with a double-double in this match with 11 kills and 10 digs.
Paige Merrick recorded a season and career high 51 assists and
Jaimie Thompson had a season high 32 digs.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first set, but Rochester College would rally throughout the remainder of the set. However, the Lady Tigers were already too far ahead for them to make the come-back and CU would take set one, 25-22.
After Rochester College controlled the second set from start to finish the Lady Tigers bounced back with 25-20 and 25-22 wins in sets three and four. With the Lady Tigers trailing 15-12 in the third set Fonseca recorded a kill that began a 13-5 rally by CU. In the fourth set Campbellsville jumped out to a 6-2 lead and then a 15-10 and ultimately 20-12 before Rochester College threw together a last minute rally that fell short as Merrick recorded one of her seven kills in the match giving the Lady Tigers the 25-22 victory and the 3-1 win.
17 of the Lady Tiger's 25 sets have now been decided by five points or fewer. They have a 12-5 record in sets decided by five points or fewer.
Campbellsville finishes up at the Siena Heights Invitational on Saturday, September 1. The matches are scheduled for 9 a.m. against Robert Morris University and 1 p.m. against Huntington University.
