No. 17 Cumberlands out-scores Tigers 28-7 in second half to complete comeback

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — University of the Cumberlands out-scored Campbellsville football 28-7 in the second half and came from behind to upend the Tigers, 35-21.

No. 17 Cumberlands extends its series over the Tigers with 18 wins in 30 meetings, while Campbellsville falls to 0-3 on the year.

Tonight, the Tigers had multiple opportunities to take a two-score lead but couldn't capitalize after holding the time of possession in minutes, 37-23, in their favor. After Campbellsville forced the Patriots to punt on their first four possessions, and leading already 7-0, the Tigers recovered a muffed punt with 11:44 left in the second quarter. But CU couldn't not take advantage of the best field position it would have all night.

Noah Bicksler missed a 43-yard field goal and Cumberlands came right back with its longest drive of the night – an eight-play 74-yard drive - to tie it up at seven-all.

But Campbellsville answered just before halftime. Jeremy Hinds hit a streaking Kendon Young down the left sideline for a 63-yard bomb to lead 14-7 at the break.

Coming out of halftime, the Patriots scored on three of their first four drives and did so on a combined eight plays. On the flipside, Campbellsville had to punt on its first three drives of the second half and Hinds fumbled on the fourth drive leading to a flea-flicker touchdown with 2:53 left in the third quarter for UC.

Leading now 28-14, the Patriots held the momentum for the remainder of the night.

Hinds did go down with 10 minutes to go in the contest and Josh Davis took over the play-calling responsibility. The freshmen from Georgetown, Ky. led Campbellsville on its final two possessions – including the Tigers' second-longest drive of the night – ending with a touchdown pass to Brayden Russell with 5:15 left.

But after cutting the lead to seven, 28-21, the special teams unit let the Tigers down. Cumberlands returned the kickoff to the 45-yard line and scored two plays later to ice the game, 35-21.

Hinds finished the night throwing for 195 yards on 14-of-26 with the TD to Young. Young led the receiving core with eight catches and 129-yards – which is the third-most in a single-game during his career.

Davis went 9-of-12 for 81 yards. Ormoni Zanders picked up his first rushing touchdown of the night with a 13-yard scamper in the first quarter and finished the night with 50 yards on 12 carries.

Campbellsville now returns home to Finley Stadium next Saturday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET vs. Point University.
