Tigers Earn A One-Point Victory Over Point University Behind Young's Big Day

Second half defensive plays fuel comeback effort by the Campbellsville Football team

Campbellsville, Ky. - Campbellsville football earned their first win of the 2018 season with a 30-29 victory over Point University Saturday afternoon at Citizens Bank Field.

The Tigers scored 16 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters to come back from 29-14. That 29-14 score was short-lived as the Skyhawks had just scored a touchdown on an interception return but CU blocked the extra point attempt and returned it to the end zone for two points to make it 29-16.

That's when the Tigers found new life, scoring touchdowns on their next two offensive drives after the defense held strong against the PU offense.

BJay Pelt got the first of three CU interceptions in the fourth quarter that led to a 62-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Josh Davis to junior receiver Kendon Young. Young's second receiving touchdown of the season brought the score within a score to 29-23 for the Skyhawks.

Campbellsville's defense then forced a punt by Point and it only took the Tigers two plays to tie the game. Young caught another long pass from Davis for 61 yards setting up a 10-yard rushing touchdown for redshirt freshman running back Ormoni Zanders. The extra point attempt was crucial again as redshirt sophomore kicker Noah Bicksler knocked it through the uprights to give CU the one-point lead that the Tigers would eventually win by.

Zanders scored the Tigers' game-winning final touchdown but also began the game on an exciting note with a 78-yard scamper to give CU an early 7-0 lead. Zanders finished the game with 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the day.

The Skyhawks made a big defensive play and a big special teams play that resulted in field goals to bring the score to 7-6.

The first play came five minutes into the game as they took a 48-yard fumble return back to the Campbellsville eight yard line before CU's defense held strong forcing a Point field goal.

Two drives later, Chase Turner for Point took a Bicksler punt 70 yards down to the Tiger five yard line but the defense stood tall again limiting the Skyhakws to another field goal.

The Tigers scored the next touchdown of the game on an eight play, 85 yard drive behind two big plays from Young with a 26-yard run and 31-yard reception. The drive was capped off by a Darquan Richardson three-yard run to make the 14-6.

Young shined for the Tigers in the passing game today totaling 187 yards. The majority of those receptions came from Davis, who relieved starting quarterback Jeremy Hinds after Hinds was injured in the first quarter.

That's when the Skyhawks scored their 16 unanswered points during the game. Running back Melvin Smalls scored on a seven-yard run to make it 14-13 CU, kicker Wesley Rubiera added a 34-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter to make it 16-14 Point, then they scored two defensive touchdowns in the third quarter, an 88-yard fumble return touchdown and a 38-yard interception return touchdown.

Campbellsville football will go on the road next week to face Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Ky. at 1:30 ET on Saturday, Sept 29.
