Coelho leads Lady Tigers to Sweep in Home Opener Over Life Running Eagles

Coelho carries the load for CU with 15 of the team’s 39 kills in home opener

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger Volleyball bounced back Thursday night with a 3-0 victory over Life University in their first match of the 2018 season at the Powell Athletic Center. CU won each set by five or more points, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18.

Head Coach Eric Snyder earns a victory in his very first game coaching inside the Powell Athletic Center. After playing 12 matches on the road, Snyder was able to feel the atmosphere inside the Powel Athletic Center Thursday night.

"It was fun, it was really great," Snyder said. "[Powell Athletic Center] is a great place to play, we have great fans, we have great support amongst the community. Whether it's students, faculty or really anyone that comes out to our games they're all real into it and it's just awesome."

Maria Coelho dominated for CU offensively, recording 15 total kills on 34 attempts for a .324 hitting percentage. Coelho's 15 kills accounted for 38% of the Lady Tigers' 39 kills.

"We moved her to the opposite side, the right side, a few games ago and it's really paying dividends for her offensively, making her a better attacker overall," Snyder said.

In the first set, Campbellsville set the tone, never trailing at any point during the set. The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 12-7 lead to force the Running Eagles to call their first timeout and the closest Life came to tying the score was getting the score back to within three at 17-14.

The Running Eagles showed signs of life in the second set, getting out to leads multiple times early on in the set. The largest and latest lead for LU came once again at the score of 17-14 but that's when Campbellsville went on a 8-1 run to take a 22-18 lead, Life to call their two timeouts within two points.

The third set was all Lady Tigers as they jumped to a 7-0 lead to start the set. The closest LU brought the margin down to was a four-point Lady Tiger lead at 12-8 but that would be as close as they got before Campbellsville earned the sweep win.

"We saw some good things, we saw some things we need to work on but those are things we worry about fixing during practice," Snyder said. "We're going to get ready for tomorrow night, rolls the balls out and play as hard as we can."

The Lady Tigers will be right back in action at the Powell Athletic Center tomorrow night at 7 p.m. ET as they host the University of the Cumberlands.
