Lady Tigers Trio Of Outside Hitters Carry Comeback In CU's Five-Set Win Over Patriots

Johnson, Coelho and Flendrich all record double-digit kills for CU

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger volleyball won their second match in as many days as they topped the University of the Cumberlands Patriots 3-2 in a five-set slugfest at the Powell Athletic Center.

Campbellsville had to come back down a set on two separate occasions during the match, dropping the first set 25-17 and the third set 26-15. CU responded in the second set to win 25-19 then in the fourth set, after jumping to a 5-0 lead to eventually win the set 25-18. The fifth and final set also started well for the Lady Tigers with another 5-0 start before taking the final set 15-12.

The second set started off strong for CU as a five-point lead at 9-4 forcing UC to take their first timeout. Despite the Patriots bringing the score back to within two points (21-19) late in the set, the Lady Tigers answered by scoring the next four points to win the set. Outside hitters Maria Coelho and Sonia Flendrich each recorded four kills in the set to lead CU's offensive attack.

After the 5-0 start in the fourth set for the Lady Tigers, the Patriots charged back to within one at 15-14. CU responded by outscoring the Patriots 10-5 to finish the fourth set and force the tie breaking fifth set. Coelho was on fire in the fourth set hitting 50 percent on her six kills and got some help from Katie Johnson who added four kills.

Campbellsville carried the momentum over into the fifth set with another 5-0 start as UC called timeouts at 3-0 and 5-0. The Lady Tigers never relinquished the lead in the final set to win the set even though the Patriots brought the score within a point at 9-8. Johnson finished the match with her third four-kill set after doing so in the first and fourth sets to help seal the deal for CU.

After playing their first two games of the 2018 season at the Powell Athletic Center, the Lady Tigers will play five-straight matches away from Campbellsville to finish out the month of September. After a road conference match at Georgetown College, CU will head to Bourbonnais, Ill. to play four games in a tournament hosted by Olivet Nazarene University.
