Lady Tigers rally in first set and finish sweep over UPIKE to open Mid-South Conference play

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — After getting down early, Lady Tiger volleyball rallied and ended up sweeping University of Pikeville on Tuesday night, 26-24, 25-14, 25-22.

Maria Coelho led CU's attack with 12 kills, while Sonia Flendrich had nine kills and Katie Johnson and Julia Fonseca both had eight.

The Lady Tigers (8-1, 1-0 MSC) got down early in the first set after the Bears (4-7, 0-1 MSC) led 14-7 and later 18-11 but Campbellsville rallied, and it would flip the entire momentum of the match.

After coach Eric Snyder burned a pair of timeouts, the Lady Tigers went on a 6-1 lead to cut Pikeville's lead to two, 19-17, and then finished the set on a 15-6 run to win in extra points, 26-24.

The opening set didn't go Campbellsville's way on the offensive side of the net. The Lady Tigers dominated with 18 kills compared to only eight for UPIKE, but CU had 10 errors – which totaled two less than it had in the final two sets combined.

But the Lady Tigers figured it out to lead 1-0 after the first.

In the second frame, it was all Campbellsville. UPIKE hit its lowest percentage of the night with only six kills and six errors on 31 attacks. The Lady Tigers countered with 11 kills in the second set.

In the third, Campbellsville secured its first sweep of the season. CU hit .257 with 16 kills on 35 attacks. UPIKE gave the Lady Tigers a little push late after getting back within one point, 18-17. But the Lady Tigers finished on a 7-5 run to win, 25-23.

Of the 45 kills, Paige Merrick finished with 33 assists and added 13 digs for another double-double. Jaimie Thompson led the Lady Tigers with 18 digs, while Flendrich finished one short of double figures with nine.

Campbellsville will stay on the road this week as the Lady Tigers travel to Asbury University on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. ET.
