Smith's offensive putback with 17 seconds propels Tigers in come-from-behind win

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Andrew Smith cleaned up a Stephaun Adams miss with 17.7 seconds left and Cumberland University's Shamari Denson missed a 15-foot jumper with time expiring to give Campbellsville its first conference win of the year, 54-53.

Smith only had nine points and was 3-of-10 from the floor but the 10threbound was a big one as the Tigers (15-2, 1-1 MSC) only scored nine second-chance points all night.

Cumberland (8-5, 1-1 MSC) held Campbellsville, which averaged almost 95 points per game, to a season-low in points, as the Tigers shot just 29 percent from the field, including 6-of-23 from the field. The Phoenix led 29-23 at the half and a dunk from Ty Sean Powell, who finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds, upped the advantage to eight.

Campbellsville put together an 11-4 run midway through the period for a 40-38 edge, its first lead since 3-2, and the Tigers netted only two field goals in the final 11 minutes of the game, hitting eight free throws.

Joan Duran's layup and two foul shots from Smith put the Tigers ahead, 45-39, but Powell answered with a field goal and Denson's jumper cut the deficit to two. One free throw by Campbellsville's Ronald Taylor made it 48-45 and it stayed that way for almost three minutes before a Stephaun Adams layup for the Tigers at the 4:40 mark of the game.

Powell's back-to-back baskets made it a one-point game with 2:30 remaining and neither team scored again until the final seconds. Powell connected on two foul shots with 35.0 seconds to play for a 53-52 CU advantage, but Smith got the offensive rebound and put-back off an Adams miss with 17.7 seconds to play.

Adams posted 17 points for the Tigers but made only 4-of-20 shots from the field, 3-for-12 from 3-point range. Smith finished with nine points and 11 rebounds while Deion Evans had eight points and 11 boards.

Campbellsville forced 19 turnovers, 13 in the second half, and the Phoenix made just 5-of-12 at the foul line in the contest.

Cumberland ran the Tigers off the 3-point line, holding Campbellsville to just 2-of-11 from behind the arc in the first half with both makes by Evans, who shoots just 25 percent from 3-point range.

Campbellsville finished with six triples (6-of-23), as Adams hit three in the second half.

With the win, the Tigers now get in the win column for the first time in conference play. CU will host Lindsey Wilson on Saturday in the Battle of Highway 55. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET in the Powell Athletic Center.
