Men’s volleyball drops tight five-set match to Belmont Abbey

HARROGATE, Tenn. – In their second match in as many days, Tiger volleyball came up just short in a tightly contested match against Belmont Abbey College at Lincoln Memorial University Saturday afternoon.

Rafael Cruz and Jason Camacho were stellar for the Tigers, each earning 15 kills on the match. Camocho's hitting percentage was slightly better at .222 with Cruz finishing with a .189 hitting percentage.

CU got off to a good start in the first set, winning by a 25-20 score getting four kills from Cruz and another three from Camacho. The Tigers also scored on five service aces in the set with two from Jeremy Hernandez and one each from Camacho, Nils Kleinschmidt and Diego Romero.

After the Crusaders ran away with the second set at 25-17, the third set was played much closer with BAC coming out on top 25-22. The Tigers bounced back on the attack hitting .161 after a negative percentage in the second.

Camacho was on fire in the third set, earning seven kills on 11 attacks with only one error for a .545 hitting percentage in the set. For Belmont Abbey, the block was crucial in the third as they earned five to none for Campbellsville.

CU got back in the match with a necessary win in the fourth set by a score of 25-21. The fourth was the first set where the Tigers outhit the Crusaders with a .310 hitting percentage for CU and a .167 average for BAC.

This set belonged to Cruz who got six kills on 10 attacks with only two errors. The blocks went the way of the Tigers as well in the fourth as they got two of their three blocks in the match in the fourth set.

The final and deciding set was a tight affair that the Tigers could never get a lead in, as they fell 15-12. CU did a good job of fighting back from down 10-7 to get the score tied at 10-10 but the Crusaders were able to recapture that three-point lead and finish off the match.

The Tigers won't get back to game action until next Saturday when they travel to Missouri Baptist University on Jan. 19. That will be their only other match before heading into the NCCAA Invitational in two weeks.
