CU’s Madison trio carries Lady Tigers in comeback win over Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – In a game that didn't look to be going Campbellsville's way, second half adjustments and monster games from Madison Stewart, Madison Kaiser and Madison Faulkner helped the Lady Tigers beat the University of the Cumberalnds 75-68.

Both Stewart and Kaiser dropped career highs as Stewart scored a game-high 29 points and 17 of Kaiser's 22 were scored in the fourth quarter. Kaiser hit five three-pointers in the fourth to help CU regain a lead and extend it with a dagger of a triple with about two minutes left to give LTB a 71-66 lead.

Faulkner didn't have the most efficient afternoon but scored 16 points for the entire point output from the CU bench and also grabbed seven rebounds.

With the three Madisons handling the scoring load, Savannah Gregory and Caitlin Hall filled their roles by reaching double figures in key categories. Hall did her usual distributing, recording 11 assists and Gregory was a force on the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers.

The second half was huge for the Lady Tigers, outscoring the Patriots 51-35 in the second period after trailing most of the first three quarters.

Things started to turn for CU with a 9-2 run to start the second half to pull within 35-33. They took their first lead since late in the first quarter at 39-37 in the third after a Stewart and-one play. Patriots took the lead back to finish the third but CU outscored UC 22-15 in the quarter.

Lady Tigers had a rough first half going into the break down nine points at 33-24 as they shot 8-for-36 (22.2%) from the field, 1-for-10 (10%) from three and 7-for16 (43.8%) from the free-throw line. The zone defense from the Patriots swarmed around CU players when they got the ball in the lane and outside shots were not falling.

The first quarter was back and forth as each team traded leads early, with CU starting up 4-1, then the teams traded runs as each scored six-straight as the Patriots led 7-4, then the Lady Tigers led 10-7 finished off by a 7-0 run for UC going up 14-10 before ending the quarter up 16-14.

The Lady Tigers really hit shooting woes in the second quarter, only making two shots from the field in the entire quarter. One of those shots was a three from Madison Kaiser to stop a 5-0 run from the Patriots to start the quarter. UC outscored Campbellsville 17-10 in the quarter as CU was scored five of those points from the free-throw line.

Campbellsville will have a return trip home for a single game next Thursday when they host Pikeville at the Powell Athletic Center before traveling to Shawnee State next Saturday for a top-10 matchup.
