No. 6 Lady Tigers finish strong in 80-75 win over University of Pikeville Bears

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A big first half lead didn't last for No. 5 Campbellsville but the Lady Tigers never lost the advantage and held on late to outlast a pesky University of Pikeville squad, 80-75.

The Lady Tigers (20-2, 6-0 MSC) were ahead by as large as 21 points in the first half and forced 18 turnovers in the first 20 minutes but Pikeville had multiple rallies in them and stepped its defense up as well to make things interesting.

It was 11 second-half Campbellsville turnovers that helped the Bears get back into it.  To open the second half, Pikeville (14-8, 3-3 MSC) went on a mini 7-0 run to cut the lead to single digits, 54-46.

Madison Faulkner, who finished with 14 points, hit a pair of free throws with 1:25 left in the third frame to end that 7-0 run but the Bears scored six straight cutting the lead to six, 56-50.

Another Madison, Madison Kaiser, kick-started the Lady Tigers in the fourth quarter with her first and only 3-pointer of the night. That ignited a quick 6-0 run as the Lady Tigers went ahead, 65-55. But the Bears wouldn't go down without a battle. Pikeville answered with a 7-0 run cutting the lead to three, 65-62, forcing coach Ginger High Colvin to call a timeout.

Then it was senior Madison Stewart stepping up when her team needed a boost. Stewart scored on back-to-back buckets to push the lead to five, 74-69, before it was the defense that sealed the deal late.

After Pikeville cut the lead to three, 76-73, with just over one-minute left, another Madison made her presence felt. Pikeville had the ball with 30 seconds left, down three points, but Faulkner picked up one of the 18 CU steal. In transition, Caitlin Hall delivered one of her patented no-look dimes back to Faulkner for a basket and a foul. She hit the free throw with 27 ticks remaining left to put CU ahead, 79-73.

Mary Englert scored two of her team-high 19 points with 22 seconds left but a Stewart free throw to put CU ahead, 80-75, sealed the deal.

Stewart led CU with 26 points – which is the fourth 20-plus point game in her career and back-to-back games with 20-plus after recording a career-high 29 on Saturday vs. Cumberlands. She finished the night 10-of-18 overall and 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point line to lead all scorers.

For the third time in her career, Savannah Gregory reached double-figure rebounds and tallied another double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. She also finished with five steals to lead CU.

With Campbellsville's win and Shawnee State falling to Georgetown, 83-69, the Lady Tigers have a 1.5 game lead over the Bears in the Mid-South Conference. Sixth-ranked Campbellsville and seventh-ranked Shawnee State meet in a border battle on Saturday afternoon in Portsmouth, Ohio. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
