Big comeback falls just short as 15th-ranked Pikeville takes down No. 10 Tigers

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A four-point first half lead for Campbellsville flipped into a 10-point deficit just four minutes into the second half and the Tigers never could recover, dropping their third straight game, 88-82.

The 10th-ranked Tigers, who were needing a big win over a ranked foe in No. 15 Pikeville, started out better than anyone could ask – hitting all seven shots to start the game. But the second half was exactly the opposite as CU (16-5, 2-4 MSC) went 0-for-8 to start the second stanza.

Pikeville (17-4, 4-2 MSC) went on a 14-0 run to start the frame. That was extended to 27-9 and the Bears led, 64-50, with 11:33 left.

Freshman Sam Weining, who hit a big 3 close to end of the first half, hit his second triple with 7:20 on the clock and that started a major Campbellsville rally.

Just minutes later, the Tigers kept chipping away and Pikeville went cold. Stephaun Adams and Hagen Tyler both banged 3s and brought the Powell Athletic Center crowd to its feet by cutting the lead to four, 77-73.

CU answered the 27-9 run by the Bears with a 15-2 run itself - forcing coach Kelly Wells to call a Pikeville timeout with 2:47 left.

Out of the break, the Bears scored but Andrew Smith capitalized with an old fashioned 3-point play to put CU within one, 79-78. Smith finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds in 34 minutes of play tonight.

But the one-point deficit was as close as the Tigers could get. After a Pikeville basket, Jacob King picked up a loose ball after a blocked shot and was able to score, 81-80, with 1:20 left.

Another Pikeville score put the Bears up by three by and Stephaun Adams cut it right back to one with a layup, 83-82. But then it was Pikeville's Chase Parsley hitting his fourth 3-pointer of the night with 33 seconds left for the dagger, 86-82.

The Bears blistered the nets from deep by hitting 12-of-19 (63 percent) and were 59 percent from the floor in the second half (20-of-34). The Tigers hit just 37 percent in the second period (13-of-25).

Hagen Tyler had an opportunity with 20 ticks remaining but his double-clutched 3 missed and Pikeville hit two free throws to ice the game. Tyler finished the night with 18 points on 5-of-12 shooting and 3-of-5 from deep. Adams led the Tigers with 23 and also dished out five assists.

The struggle for Campbellsville was the bench production. Weining was the lone Tigers off the bench to score – both were big 3-pointers in each half.

Pikeville didn't have much bench scoring either, but the starters all finished with double figures, led by Xavier Gaona's 18. Jayvian Delacruz tallied a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tigers will now hit the road once more for another MSC matchup on Saturday at Shawnee State. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Portsmouth.
