Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jordan Alves

Stewart scores 29 and Lady Tigers sink free throws late to down No. 7 Shawnee State

Madison Stewart scores 29 points for her third-straight 20-point game

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Senior Madison Stewart tallied her third straight 20+ point performance and Jordan Doram scored 21 points off the bench to lead No. 6 Campbellsville over No. 7 Shawnee State, 77-70.

The Lady Tigers extend their record to 21-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Mid-South Conference play – which marks the halfway point of the conference slate. The Bears drop their second straight game for the second time this season after falling to unranked Georgetown on Thursday. SSU falls to 17-5 and 4-2 in MSC play.

The start for Campbellsville on Saturday is arguably the best start to any game all season. The Lady Tigers raced out to a 19-2 lead after Stewart hit her second 3 and scored 10 early points. Caitlin Hall hit the fourth 3 for the Lady Tigers in the opening period to put CU ahead, 26-6 but then Shawnee State would start to creep back in.

The Bears ended the opening quarter on a 13-7 run but the Lady Tigers hit all four 3-point attempts to start and Shawnee State was 1-of-5. The was the name of the game for the Bears throughout the contest, though, as they finished only 2-of-16 – their second-lowest output from downtown this year.

Shawnee State did it inside, though, and scored 44 of its 70 points in the paint and the second quarter went all in favor of the Bears. In the second frame, the Bears outscored Campbellsville 19-11 and hit 8-of-20 overall – which was the best quarter in the contest for SSU.

After leading 37-34 into the break, it was a knock-down drag-out the rest of the way. That's when Doram made her presence felt. After the Bears tied the game at 43-all, Big Fella put the Lady Tigers back up after starting 7-of-8 from the floor. She finished hitting 8-of-10 and 5-of-6 at the free throw line.

The third quarter was dead even. Both teams went 7-of-15 from the floor but the Lady Tigers had the narrow edge by hitting both free throw attempts.

That was the story of the game in the fourth quarter. Shawnee State was able to cut the lead to as little as four with 6:00 left but Madison Faulkner picked up her lone steal at a perfect time and found Stewart for two of her 29 points to put CU back up by six, 62-56.

The lead pushed back to 10 points, 66-56, after Savannah Gregory finished a pass from Caitlin Hall with 4:00 left to cap an 8-0 run. Gregory finished the day with only two points but had three boards, a steal and assist after being hampered with foul trouble. Hall not only dished out five assists but had six boards and 11 points after playing all 40 minutes for the first time in her career.

In the final quarter, Campbellsville went only 4-of-7 overall but hit 16-of-18 from the free throw line to seal their first win over Shawnee State on the road since 2014-15. Two of the biggest free throws came from the bench as Sammy Rogers entered for Jordan Doram after she fouled out and hit two charity stripe shots to help the Lady Tigers put the game on ice.

The CU offense hit 27-of-53 overall (51 percent) and the defense was just as good. The Lady Tigers scored 15 points off 16 Shawnee State turnovers and held Bears' leading scorer Ashton Lovely (17 ppg) scoreless for the third time in her career.

With the win, the Lady Tigers are now ahead of Lindsey Wilson College by two games in the Mid-South Conference standings. Shawnee State is currently third at 4-2 inside conference play.

The Lady Tigers will now hit the road to play Cumberland University and Lindsey Wilson next week. Tipoff with Cumberland University will be on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET in Lebanon, Tennessee. Saturday's matchup at Lindsey Wilson is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
