Lady Tigers roar back but Emmanuel advances to NWCA semifinal via tiebreaker

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Down by eight points and only two matches left, Campbellsville University women's wrestling rallied to tie Emmanuel College at 22-all but the Lions earned the dual victory via a tiebreaker and advanced into the NWCA Semifinal.

After former Lady Tiger Hannah Gladden earned a 12-5 decision over Alexia Foca at 155 lbs., it was up to Kenya Sloan and Alexandra Castillo to keep Campbellsville's hopes of repeating as NWCA National Dual champions alive.

Sloan earned bonus points by picking up a pin over Mia Leon in 1:05. With the score now, 22-19, in favor of Emmanuel College, Castillo needed to pin or earn a scoreless tech-fall to give the Lady Tigers the win. She held Kaylee Seabolt scoreless but earned a 9-0 victory.

Then things got a little confusing with the tiebreaker…. Tied at 22-all, the NWCA officials had to go all the way down the line with coaches red and yellow cards, pins/forfeits, tech falls, and individual points.

Neither coach from CU or EC had a red or yellow card, so it went to pins and forfeits. Campbellsville had two pins but Emmanuel had one win and a forfeit for another tie. So it went to tech falls. Both teams had three tech's, so it went to individual scoring. The Lions out-scored CU, 50-44, to earn the tiebreaking win.

The Lady Tigers and Lions split the 10 matches with fine wins each. McKayla Campbell won at 109 lbs. via a 12-2 tech fall, while Kortal Sugiyama also tech'd her opponent at 123 lbs. Andribeth Rivera picked up bonus points with a pin over Abigail Nette in 1:52.

Campbellsville did have to forfeit at 136 lbs. – which could have costed the Lady Tigers the dual.

Katelin Barnett (101), Mia Rodriguez (116) and Sophia Carson (143) and Alexia Foca (155) all lost their respective matches.

With the loss, Campbellsville's highest finish can now only be fifth place. The Lady Tigers face Gannon College late on Friday night. More information will be updated after the consolation round vs. Gannon.
