Strong third quarter helps No. 7 Lady Tigers knockoff undefeated Georgetown 78-64

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Lady Tiger basketball won their Mid-South Conference opener against Georgetown College 78-64 Saturday afternoon at the Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.

The win was due largely in part to the big third quarter from CU, who outscored GC 24-10. The 10 points scored in the third quarter was the second-lowest total scored by Georgetown in a quarter this season.

CU had three players in double figures in the game led by 19 from Madison Faulkner. Faulkner's scoring output was balanced between the first and second half as she got to double figures in the first half with 11 and added eight in the second.

Faulkner's 19 came off the bench, leading the second unit that scored 38 of the Lady Tigers' 78 were scored from the bench. Lexy Lake scored seven, Alexus Calhoun scored five, Faith Lake scored four and Shyla Calbert added three.

Jordan Doram and Madison Stewart also scored in double figures in the game with Stewart scoring 16 and Doram adding 12. Doram dominated down in the post in only 15 minutes on the floor as she spent a lot of time on the bench in foul trouble. Stewart was money from the free throw line, going 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.

The Lady Tigers struggled from the field in the first half, shooting only 33.3 percent, but picked it up to shot 57.1 percent in the second half.

From distance, CU didn't hit a three-pointer until the fourth quarter as their 160-game streak of hitting a three was in jeopardy for most of the game. The streak was kept alive as Savannah Gregory hit a triple at the 8:32 mark of the fourth quarter.

The game was a tightly called affair from the officials as there were a total of 53 fouls called, 26 on CU and 27 on Georgetown. Each team shot exactly 30 free throws with the Lady Tigers hitting 28 and Georgetown hitting 25.

The amount of fouls called had both teams see players get into foul trouble with two from each side fouling out. Doram and Calhoun fouled out for CU along with Madison Darnell and Alexis Stapleton fouling out for Georgetown.

The game was tight throughout the first half but after the 9:02 mark when Georgetown led by two points, GC never regained the lead as there was only one lead change in the game and only three ties. Campbellsville held their lead into halftime before exploding to their largest lead of the game at 18 points multiple times in the second half.

The Lady Tigers start the MSC season 1-0 as they will host Cumberland University next Thursday at the Powell Athletic Center for their first home game in about a month.
