Lady Tiger wrestling ends NWCA Duals with sixth-place finish

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger wrestling split on the final day of the NWCA National Duals and finished in sixth place.

The fifth-ranked Lady Tigers took down No. 3 Southern Oregon, 34-14, before falling to No. 7 University of the Cumberlands, 24-20, in the fifth-place match.

In the last six years, Campbellsville has finished as high as seventh each year. The Lady Tigers were seventh in 2014, fourth in 2015, third in 2016 and 2017, before winning the title last year.

Campbellsville 34, Southern Oregon 14

Campbellsville dominated the early matches with five straight wins to open the dual before Southern Oregon won its lone two matches at 136 and 143 pounds – including a forfeit at 143.

Katelin Barnett (101), McKayla Campbell (109), Mia Rodriguez (116), Koral Sugiyama (123) and Andribeth Rivera all earned win to help the Lady Tigers sprint out to a 19-4 lead.

After Sophia Carson lost to Gladdys Palama and Sienna Ramirez earned a forfeit win, CU earned three straight wins. Alexis Foca (155), Kenya Sloan (170) and Alexandra Castillo (191) all picked up pins to seal the win.

With the win, the Lady Tigers moved into the fifth-place match with rival Cumberlands.

Cumberlands 24, Campbellsville 20

A forfeit at 143 once again hurt the Lady Tigers chances of sealing a fifth-place finish. Campbellsville led, 13-9, after the 130-pound match but Cumberlands won the next three matches and sealed the end at 191 lbs.

The dual started with both teams going back and forth in the first three matches. Jessica Rodriguez beat Barnett at 101 pounds with a 10-0 tech fall and Campbell earned the same result over UC's Autumn Gordon.

Madison Angelito upset Mia Rodriguez at 116 lbs. with a 6-2 decision. At 123 and 130, the Lady Tigers earned a pair of back-to-back wins. Sugiyama won 13-2 over Ashley Tobe and Rivera picked up a 12-1 tech over Ashley Ikner.

But then UC set the tone the rest of the way. Bridgette Duty beat Sophia Carson at 136 lbs., picked up a forfeit at 143 and Anna Naylow won at 155 over Alexia Foca

Campbellsville cut the deficit to two, 21-19, after Kenya Sloan earned a 10-0 tech fall over Payton Rigert.

It came down to the 191-pound match but Castillo lost 10-3 to Jessica Kirby.

The Lady Tigers host Emmanuel College on Thursday, Jan. 10 for their first home dual of the season.
