CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Getting back to Mid-South Conference play the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team was looking to get back on track in conference play but fell short on Tuesday night as Thomas More University took the match 3-1.
The Lady Tigers took the first set 25-21 but the Saints followed up with the next three set wins by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-21 to close out CU as they now move to 13-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Neither team was particularly strong on the attack with TMU the better of the two in hitting percentage at .110 compared to just .045 for Campbellsville. Thomas More's Emily Mohs led her team in kills at 14 while also having a .217 hitting percentage on 46 total attacks.
For the Lady Tigers,
Sonia Flendrich and
Sophie Ball tied for the team lead in kills with nine but Ball was the slightly more efficient attacker with a .171 hitting percentage in the match.
What kept CU in the match was their strong defensive game on the back row led by senior
Jaimie Thompson's team-high 31 digs. As a team, the Lady Tigers were able to dig up half of the Saints attacks as they finished with 82 digs on 164 TMU team attacks.
There were a high amount of blocks in the match as well with Thomas More getting the advantage in that field with 11 total compared to just seven for CU. Leading the way for the Lady Tigers in that stat was their middle blockers in
Kymbra Kirby and
Irene Baroni, as Kirby had three block assists with Baroni recording two.
CU will return home for their first home match in about three weeks when they welcome Georgetown College to Gosser Gymnasium this Thursday night at 7 p.m. ET. It will also be Lady Tiger volleyball Dig Pink Night to benefit the Side-Out Foundation.
