CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – For the first time in a month, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team and their supporters celebrated a victory inside the Gosser Gymnasium after a 3-0 sweep of Brescia University on Friday night.
The Lady Tigers won each set by smaller and smaller margins as the scores went 25-19, 25-21, and 25-23. The win breaks Campbellsville's three-match losing streak and is their first win at home since Sept. 12 against University of the Cumberlands.
CU was carried by an efficient offensive attack led by sophomore
Sonia Flendrich, who finished with the match-high with 15 kills on 35 attempts with only four errors for a .314 hitting percentage.
Flendrich was supported by the Campbellsville middles in
Kymbra Kirby and
Asarar Gony who combined for 15 kills after finishing second and third on the team in kills. Kirby had nine kills and led any attacker with more than 10 attacks with a .438 hitting percentage as Gony finished with six kills on 16 attempts for a .250 hitting percentage.
In the first two sets, the Lady Tigers held six-point advantages, only to see them disappear as the set win on, going up 6-0 to start the first then being up 8-2 early in the second. They even held a lead early in the third that Brescia came back from to go up three-points at 12-9 but after a well-timed CU timeout, the Lady Tigers fought back for six of the next seven points to take their own lead.
Campbellsville will have a quick turnaround to get back into Mid-South Conference play on the road at University of Pikeville with the match starting scheduled to start at 6 p.m. ET.
