Lady Tigers squander 2-0 match lead as Cumberlands earns 3-2 comeback win

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – About a month after the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team earned a home win, in comeback fashion, against University of the Cumberlands, the Patriots returned the favor on Friday night at their home gym.

Both instances saw the road team jump out to a 2-0 set lead before the home team rattled off the next three sets to earn thrilling comeback wins. Friday night the Patriots came out on top after set scores of 16-25, 15-25, 25-19, 25-15, and 15-13.

The difference in the match was UC's ability on the attack after having the first two sets both with single digit kills and a hitting percentage under .100, including a negative percentage in the second set. Every set after that the Patriots had kills in double digits and they were extremely efficient in the final set with a .304 hitting percentage in the fifth.

The Lady Tigers were led on the night by Sonia Flendrich, who finished with 11 kills on 42 attacks to finish with a .119 hitting percentage. Flendrich was one of two CU players to finish with a double-double as she added 16 digs and setter Paige Merrick finished with 31 assists and 12 digs in the match.

Behind Flendrich's total kills, CU had six more players with four or more kills with Kymbra Kirby finishing with nine, Sophie Ball and Asarar Gony with seven, Irene Baroni at five, then Sutton Mason and Savannah Moss with four each. It was, however, three Patriot attackers in double digits that pushed Cumberlands over the edge as Leah Crist had a match high 12 kills, Lily Chapman had 11, and Mackenzie Koch had 10.

It will be a quick turnaround for Campbellsville as they head further south to Marietta, Ga. to take on Life University Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. ET scheduled first serve.
