CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Coming off of back-to-back five-set losses in Mid-South Conference play, the Campbellsville University women's volleyball team had to battle their way to not let it happen again while pulling out a 3-2 win over Cumberland University Tuesday night.
The Lady Tigers won the first two sets before giving up the third and fourth to force the fifth as the scores went 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 18-25, 15-12. CU never trailed in the fifth set after jumping out to a 3-0 lead and despite the Phoenix tying the score at 12-12.
Junior
Kymbra Kirby was a big part of finishing off the fifth set, helping record the final two points on block as she finished the match with eight kills and a career-high 10 blocks with nine block assists and the match-clinching solo block.
For the third-straight match, sophomore outside hitter
Sonia Flendrich recorded a double-double as she finished with 14 kills and 14 digs. Flendrich finished with a .125 hitting percentage, seeing a bulk of the attack attempts finishing with 48 total attacks.
Campbellsville's setter
Paige Merrick finished with 35 assists, three kills, and six digs but her service was a big aid for CU as she finished with four aces and only a single error. Merrick helped the Lady Tigers jump out to that 3-0 lead to start the fifth with one of her four aces in the match.
CU will not hit the court again until seven days from now when they host Lindsey Wilson College at Gosser Gymnasium on Oct. 29. The Lady Tigers will look to avenge another road sweep loss after doing so against the Phoenix tonight.
