CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – On a sloppy and wet night on the pitch, Campbellsville was able to win the battle of the Tigers, defeating Georgetown 1-0.
The teams knew something must give tonight as Georgetown entered the night leading the country in goals, while CU ranked in the top 10 of total shutouts on the season. As the night played on, the stout Campbellsville defense, proved to prevail shutting out GC for their first time this season.
In the first half of play, the teams were able to put together 16 shots, but none of which found the back of the net. In the period,
Tom Edge, in his return for CU, came out firing as he had three first half shots, placing three on goal.
Connor Pugh also had a pair of shots on goal, forcing Jacob Roberts to work to hold the score at zero entering the half.
However, shortly after coming out of the halftime break,
Connor Pugh, on his third shot of the match broke the scoreless draw, with a 51
st minute goal.
Throughout the remainder of the second half, each team had numerous opportunities including a three-shot sequence from
Eleder Goikoetxea and an 80
th shot on goal from Sebastian Bocaz Canales that had
Owen Stott record his fifth save of the match.
Nonetheless, it was Pugh's goal that was the decider, as CU won 1-0.
Georgetown, one of the most explosive offenses in the country, averaging 5.8 goals and 17.8 shots per game, struggled finding shots as the highly touted CU defense held them to 14 shot attempts, with only five being on target, picking up their ninth shutout of the season.
With the win, Campbellsville improves to 10-3-1 on the season and 4-2 inside conference play.
This was the last away game for the Tigers as the return to Finley Stadium for their final two games of the 2019 regular season. CU's next match will be on Wednesday as they host the Battle of Highway 55, when Lindsey Wilson comes to visit at 8 p.m. ET.
