PIKEVILLE, Ky. – An interdivisional matchup between the No. 2 Campbellsville University women's basketball team and No. 6 in the NAIA Division II rankings Marian University was tight throughout but a 28-point fourth quarter helped CU earn a 72-65 win Saturday morning.
The Lady Tigers outscored the Knights 28-22 in the fourth after entering the quarter leading 44-43 and entering halftime at a 29-29 tie. MU shot for a much better percentage in the game at 60%-36.7% but CU used defensive pressure to force 32 turnovers that led to 33 of Campbellsville's 72 points.
Coming off a scoreless game yesterday afternoon, senior guard
Caitlin Hall put up a career-high 18 points while adding four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Hall had a big fourth quarter hitting a three pointer with 4:10 left in the quarter to give CU their largest lead since the first quarter at 59-51.
The Lady Tigers never looked back from that point on, in part from Hall hitting clutch free throws down the stretch, going 5-for-6 from the line in the final 2:09 of the game. Hall finished 8-for-11 from the free throw line as Campbellsville hit 85.2 percent of their free throws in the game, finishing 19-of-22.
Marian's size caused a bit of an issue for CU as the Knights outrebounded the Lady Tigers 34-22 in the game but Campbellsville finished the game with 10 offensive rebounds to just four for MU.
Both pair of six-footers for the Knights finished with double-doubles as Katie Giller had a team-high 13 points along with 10 rebounds with Elle Williams finishing with 11 points and 10 boards.
CU had three players other than Hall in double figures with
Madison Faulkner recording her second-straight 16-point game,
Courtney Pritchett scoring 11 while adding three rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal, and
Sammy Rogers adding 15 points off the bench as she hit three shots from behind the three-point arc while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
After controlling most of the first quarter, the Lady Tigers struggled a bit through the second, allowing an 8-0 Marian run to give the Knights the lead as the game continued in a back-and-forth nature since that point. Throughout the whole game there were seven times the score was tied and six lead changes.
With the win, Campbellsville moves to 6-0 to start the season and will play in another Friday/Saturday classic next weekend when they head to Lebanon, Tenn. for games against Brescia and Voorhees at Cumberland University.
