Campbell claims 109-pound crown, Pizzo finishes in third place at Missouri Valley Open

MARSHALL, Mo. — Reigning All-American McKayla Campbell had a great start to her junior campaign by winning the 109-pound weight class at the Missouri Valley Open on Sunday. 
 
Campbell, from Wauseon, Ohio, earned 27 team points for the Lady Tigers and swept her competition with four tech falls and a 12-6 decision, to start the season with a 5-0 record in open tournament play. 

Campbells earned a bye in the first round before beating Claire Payne of York College, 10-0, beat Natalie Reyna of McKendree University, 12-6, and Aleeah Gould of King University, 10-0.

In the semifinal, Campbell continued her dominance with a 14-1 tech fall over Brooke Turber of US-Stevens Point and then won convincingly in the finals over Yurie Yoneoka of Providence, 10-0. 
 
In addition, Kaityn Pizzo finished in third place and earned 23.5 points after battling from the consolation bracket. Pizzo lost in the quarterfinals to McKendree's Felecity Taylor but earned three pins and a tech fall in the consolation round to finish in third place at 116 pounds. 
 
The Lady Tigers will now head to University of the Cumberlands on Nov. 22-23 for the Patriot Duals.
